Are the Leisure Activities of Todays Teens
Unhealthy and Overstimulating? by Dave Williams

Teenagers today have an ever-increasing number of ways to entertain themselves. With

the advent of cell phones, cable TV, the Internet, and high-tech video games, etc., teens have
countless means of amusement at their fingertips. Teens no longer have merely one or two
hobbies that they divide their time between. Gone are the days when teens spent their free
time simply playing ping-pong or collecting coins. Now teens typical leisure-time activities
involve a myriad of technical devices that are often used simultaneously. For a glimpse of
todays frenetic teen life, look at an instant message conversation between two sixteen-year-
olds:
Some researchers think that the conversation above represents an all-too-common
scenario for teens today. They are concerned that the habit of doing so many things at the
same time may be detrimental intellectually. Some wonder if this is one reason students are
having an increasingly difficult time paying attention and focusing on one thing at a time in
school. Additionally, many are concerned that spending so much time doing things that are
not physically active may be contributing to the increase in obesity among teens. Others
simply say that the way that teens spend their leisure time today may actually be
overstimulating and not relaxing.

____ 22. Technology has changed the way teens spend their free time.
____ 23. Dave is having an instant message conversation, watching a movie, playing a video
game, and talking on the phone all at once.
____ 24. Sara is only involved in one activity: instant messaging.
____ 25. Sara is not afraid to do yoga.
____ 26. Teens today often prefer to do only one thing at a time, rather than several things at
once.
____ 27. Most leisure-time activities teens engage in today are physically challenging.
____ 28. Researchers believe that doing several activities at the same time is intellectually
beneficial.
____ 29. Some think that the way todays teens spend their leisure time is less relaxing than
the way that teens of earlier generations spent their time.
