Au travers de l’étude inédite du cycle de la Genèse réalisé par Francesco Salviati entre 1552 et 1554 dans la chapelle Chigi de l’église Santa Maria del Popolo à Rome, cet article entend revenir sur l’interprétation du décor qui avait été formulée en 1961 par John Shearman. À l’appui d’une lecture iconographique prenant en considération le fonctionnement général de l’ensemble décoratif et ses conditions matérielles de visibilité par le spectateur, on montre que l’invention de la chapelle Chigi s’articule autour de l’idée d’une méditation sur l’œuvre de la création du monde, où se côtoient les régimes du terrestre et du céleste, du transitoire et de l’éternel, du réel et de l’imaginaire. La chapelle Chigi participe ainsi de manière plus générale aux discussions théologiques sur le commencement qui animent la Rome du début du XVIe siècle et se présent comme un objet de réflexion sur les potentialités (re)créatrices de l’art antique véhiculées par Raphaël.

The Sala della Creazione is the main room of the palazzo Besta of Teglio. Neither the artist nor the exact date are known and, for those reasons, the cycle remained largely ignored by art historians. The decoration is based on the Old Testament, especially the Creation, and on astrological and cartographic maps. Regarding the iconography of the Creation and the cartographic production, the Sala della Creazione appears as a unicum which combines the imagination of the origins and the one of maps. This paper wants to trace the roots of such an invention, which is linked to a deep meditation on the role of man in the order of cosmos. The poetic way of the artist and the empirical way of the cosmographer are here combined in a common goal: expose, to the eye of the spectator, the history of the world, from the Creation to present times.

Le récit biblique de la création du monde en six jours (Gn 1-2,4) est à la fois l'un des plus importants du christianisme et celui qui a posé le plus de difficultés à ses exégètes. Durant tout le Moyen Age, il fut au coeur de multiples querelles que ce soit celle contre les manichéens qui niaient tout action divine ou celle contre les aristotéliciens qui soutenaient la thèse de l'éternité du monde et non d'une création ex nihilo et ab initio temporis. Saint Augustin lui-même rappelle à différentes reprises combien malgré toutes ses tentatives il se sent désemparé face à ce récit : « mon inexpérience dans l'explication des Ecritures me fit succomber sous le fardeau » écrit-il au début de son traité sur la Genèse au sens littéral.
Comment en effet se représenter un évènement dont l'avènement ne réside que dans le seul pouvoir de création du Verbe divin ? Comme le rappelle l'historien Fernand Hallyn, « la naissance du monde ne se laisse pas décrire, on ne peut que l’imaginer tant bien que mal [...]. Toute connaissance est ici nécessairement une expérience de pensée de nature narrative ». Les théologiens des premiers sicèles chrétiens en recourant à l'analogie vont ainsi bâtir des images qui vont dès lors permettre de se représenter plus facilement le quoi et surtout le comment de la Création. C'est à partir de ces images littéraires, dont la plus célèbre demeure celle du Deus artifex, que va progressivement se construire l'iconographie de la création du monde.
L'une des spécificités de cette iconographie tient dans la possibilité et la liberté qui est offerte aux artistes de figurer, selon les ressorts propres de l'image et de leur art, le mystère du Verbe divin. Néanmoins cela ne va sans poser une difficulté de taille, à savoir comment transposer la parole créatrice dans le domaine de l'image artistique ? Comment rendre visible la Création dans son processus même de réalisation ? C'est précisément cette « verbalisation dans l'image » que l'on se propose ici d'étudier.
Cette communication sera l'occasion d'envisager la multiplicité des images littéraires forgées par les théologiens, d'étudier celles qui ont trouvé une incarnation picturale, celles qui aussi ne relèvent pas d'un héritage textuel mais plutôt visuel. Puis on se concentrera sur l'appropriation personnelle dont cette iconographie a pu faire l'objet de la part des artistes. La création du monde est en effet l'occasion de multiples projections artistiques qui se manifestent concrètement par des choix iconographiques et formels où l'on devine derrière le récit de la création du monde celui de l'oeuvre elle-même.

A/cheiro/poietos, littéralement « non faite de la main de l’homme », est un terme grec (non manufactum en latin) introduit dans la littérature chrétienne pour désigner un procédé de création d’une image censé échapper à la production humaine.

The ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, painted by Michelangelo between 1508 and 1512, has been characterized from the beginning as a paradigmatic work. Giorgio Vasari described it in the Vitae as the “light of our art”, capable of “illuminating a world plunged for centuries into darkness.” The art historian Cristina Acidini Luchinat recently recalled that “the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel is one of the very few masterpieces that can be said to have changed the course of Western art.”

Such comments may be panegyrical or reveal an acute attention to the history in art, but the fact remains that the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel is undeniably a point of reference for art and historiography of the early modern period.

Few works so perfectly mirror the theoretical trends of art history. Reflecting the aesthetic of “Genius” in the eighteenth century, “Beauty” in the nineteenth century, and a Neo- Platonic and theological ideal of art as expressed in the great iconological interpretations of the twentieth century, the Sistine Chapel now lends itself to comparative approaches aimed at understanding the poetics of Michelangelo’s art.

The purpose of this international study workshop is to question the very nature of the Sistine Chapel as a “masterpiece” by revisiting the multiple interpretations it has generated, while at the same time proposing fresh perspectives in light of new tools and methodologies in art history. Why does the Sistine Chapel represent an epistemological and aesthetic break with art from the previous generations? Is it legitimate to consider it as an uncontested and uncontestable model? Why does art history return to it on regular basis, and, moreover, why can the field’s practitioners not agree on its overall meaning?

The question of origins prompts a wide range of ideas and notions will be examined during the conference, starting with those relating to beginnings, genesis, and creation of the world; or, in other words, all that is considered as belonging to a primordial time outside of history. A reflection on origins also entails, however, an interrogation on the very notion of history and time, of genesis and its premises, - core and cradle, cause and agent, foundation and engine, generation and genealogy, ancestry and descent, as well as touching on issues of provenance, kinship, lineage, destiny, and originality. One might ever consider archaism, derived from the Greek arkhè, which refers to both commencement and commandment. All of these notions can also be expressed visually, through iconographic as well as meta- iconographic mechanisms.

This conference seeks to reconsider the full complexity of the topic of origins in the visual arts of the Renaissance. Relying on specific case studies and close readings of works of art, we will examine the conditions underlying the emergence and existence of a figurative discourse on origins. What are the themes, motifs or figures that more specifically reflect such a phenomenon? What might be the reasons for the use of such figures related to the theme of origins?

Rather than a general discourse, the conference aims to introduce papers that will disclose the common tendency of Renaissance art to focus on the poetic potentialities of origins.

Les cosmogonies – ou mythes de création du monde – n’ont jamais cessé d’accompagner l’histoire de l’humanité. Mais parce que l’in- vestigation sur les origines fut l’un des leitmotivs de la pensée des xve, xvie et du premier xviie siècles, nulle autre époque plus que la Renaissance n’a su en mesurer les enjeux anthropologiques, philo- sophiques et artistiques. À partir des œuvres de Ghiberti, Mantegna, Bosch, Michel-Ange, Raphaël, Parmigianino, Bandinelli, Salviati, Tintoret, Véronèse, Goltzius, El Greco ou encore Caravage, Florian Métral guide le lecteur dans l’exploration d’un imaginaire qui a façonné notre modernité.
Dans cette enquête visuelle, la croyance chrétienne s’unit au platonisme, l’hermétisme côtoie l’orphisme, l’astrologie se mêle à l’alchimie et à la kabbale, au moment même où les savoirs cosmo- graphiques et astronomiques – représentés par Copernic, Mercator, Kepler et Galilée – bouleversent l’image connue jusqu’alors de la terre et du cosmos. En croisant les approches historique, iconogra- phique et poétique, ce livre offre une plongée inédite dans l’art de la Renaissance, à la découverte des ressorts intimes de la création artistique.
