We just came back from seeing Black Panther in the theater.
I really enjoyed it. It's a fabulous movie and I loved how the women just stole the show. I adored Nakia. She was my favorite, followed by Shuri, then M'Baka.
I had to scramble to find a theater still showing it, and you know what? All the seats were sold out.
There were these two older black women sitting next to us, and I told them to stay until the end that there was another after credit scene (one of them was going to have words with her husband afterward about missing it) and then I had to explain who Bucky was.
And I was so close to saying \"he's Captain America's boyfriend.\"
But god damn he looked good.

As I do every year, I post my favorite and least favorite reads of the year. Note that this year I've been reading for an ALA (American Library Association) committee, which has affected what I've read this year. I've read 78 books this year, which is my personal best.
Without further ado,
Favorite books of 2017
I will have to say that I got lucky in my reading. Most of the books I read this year were fantastic, it's made it difficult to choose only 5. (I skimmed my list and there are so many other good books there, so if you follow me on goodreads, please check out my 2017 shelf!)
Honorable mention: Last Seen Leaving by Caleb Roehrig, mainly because I had picked it up intending to read only 100 pages, but instead could not put the dang thing down until I had finished it, and gave myself a case of eyestrain in the process.
5. Sunstone Volume 5 for giving a lovely satisfying conclusion to the series.
4. As I Descended by Robin Talley. This author can do no wrong. I've loved everything of hers that I've read. But. Lesbian version of Macbeth? How can I not?
3. The Rogue Not Taken by Sarah MacLean. I met the author at Book Expo last year, and this of course, is a road trip book, which is something I love.
2. Ramona Blue by Julie Murphy for wonderfully portraying a teen figuring herself out and finding a place in the world.
1. The Red by Tiffany Reisz. Takes all the things I love about erotic fanfic and puts it in original fic. This book is dirty and wrong in all the right ways.

But when I disliked something, I really disliked it.
Honorable mention: Ancient Ties by Marie Johnston - for hitting all the wrong buttons for me. Example of why while I like the concept of shifters, I have yet to read a book about them I like.
5. Been Here All Along by Sandy Hall - for having the girlfriend be the bad guy, and then redeeming herself by being the matchmaker for her boyfriend and his best friend.
4. Truthwitch by Susan Dennard - because I didn't believe the shoed-in hetersexual love interest.
3. Alan Cole is not a Coward by Eric Bell for hitting every single one of my triggers regarding abused and bullied children and making me so fucking angry that I honestly considering emailing the author to tell him he's a horrible person.
2. In other Lands by Sarah Rees Brennan - I could not get past 175 pages of this crap. I hated that it got so much love on goodreads for being a novel of nothing more than slightly interconnected anecdotes and featuring a main character who was an asshole and a bully.
but hold your horses for number 1:
Dying for Chocolate by Diane Mott Davidson. Holy shitballs. This book made me HATE reading. I literally could not pick up another book for two weeks after I read this piece of shit. I picked it up because someone on my tumbler feed had said it was a quick light mystery, and I thought, oh cool, something to read at the end of the summer before I go back to reading my lists.
Spoiler alert, it was not cool.
I hated the main character. She was an idiot and a bitch. AND she was a victim of domestic violence which the book PLAYED FOR LAUGHS. What in the fucking fuck fuck????
spoiler alert for the end - someone has been poisoning people, so heroine is too smart to eat the food, but OH WAIT, she makes espresso for herself. which she does every fucking day. So OF FUCKING COURSE the bad guy knows and has poisoned it.
She is literally the too stupid to live heroine. OH MY. GOD. So much hate. I read a lot of good books this year. Narrowing this to my top 5 or so is going to be difficult.
I'm gonna do more than 5.
- City of Blades by Robert Bennet Jackson - I just really enjoy the world building and the characters of this series. Fantastic fantasy with an edge.
- \"Beauty and the Blacksmith\" and \"Any Duchess will Do\" by Tessa Dare. Both of these were comfort reads for me in the aftermath of the election. Just sweet happy romances taking on Beauty and the Beast and My Fair Lady respectively.
- First Position by Melissa Brayden - It's about ballerinas,what can I say? I absolutely fell in love with these characters and got super invested in their lives. I need to check out more from this author.
- Lies we tell ourselves by Robin Talley - A story about two girls in the beginnings of desegregation. At times very difficult to read, but a very important read.
- Symptoms of Being Human by Jeff Garvin - Story of a gender fluid teen. Amazing book.
- The Bourbon Thief - by Tiffany Reisz - I don't even know how to describe this. Anything Reisz writes is magical, and you should definitely check her stuff out.
- The Martian - by Andy Weir - yeah I know everyone praised this last year, but I read it early in 2016 and thought it was very clever and funny. And I still haven't seen the movie yet.

- The Third Secret - by Steve Barry - I picked it up because it deals with something prominent from my childhood - the 'secrets' of the Lady of Fatima. Barry just made a mosh of it, and wow, he cannot write women.
- The Marriage Contract by Katee Robert - I don't know why this book keeps getting so much praise. I could not stand the characters and I thought it was BORING. It took me months to get back into it and stubbornly finish.
- A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness - read this with summer book club, and what's tragic is that there COULD be a good book here. The author had good ideas, but damn she needed to learn pacing. There were definitely things I liked, but I was ultimately so frustrated by the heroine by the end that I hated this book by the time I managed to slog through it.
- Mr and Mr Smith - by HelenKay Dimon - Now, I saw this author speak at a conference, and she's a lovely, amazing, funny woman. I didn't know I'd read something by her until I checked my goodreads account late. Perhaps because this book was so forgettable. You have these two male characters involved in spy stuff, and no like, a good third of the book is them spent having angry sex in their safehouse while waiting to send one of them back into danger. Um. They weren't there long enough for THAT much sex. I'd read this looking for romantic suspense, but what I got was poorly paced with little plot. Much like The Marriage Contract, it reads like a setup for a series, but I was so frustrated by the end I had no desire to read any more in the series.

Ah yes, the good old \"DNF\" list.
- Fever Pitch by Heidi Cullinan - The characters just read as so young and immature that I felt icky reading. So I gave up.
- Circus Escape - by Lilianna Rose - Just didn't have any desire to continue.
- Cinnamon and Cigarettes - by Samantha Kate - omg this book made me so ANGRY. I kept reading for as long as I could because - bisexual character who works in a library. However, the main character is such a doormat, and she does the unforgivable sin of violating library privilege. She looks up people's library records to see what they've checked out to learn shit about them (this is how she knows that her love interest is gay, by seeing that she's checkedout lesbian erotica.)
But not only is it unethical (and impossible, because most library systems will not keep long term records of what you've checked out) - it really made me dislike the main character. She's a horrible person and I have no desire to see her fall in love and have a happy ending.

I went to Catholic school for 13 years. My High School experience emphasized social justice (we even had a year of religion class based on it), and a respect for all people. Our school even sent volunteers to a summer camp for handicapped kids. So I graduated with a core understanding of seeing all people as people. (even if I left with a disagreement on what 'pro-life' meant.)
In the year 2000 I entered online fandom. It was here that I met, for the first time, someone who was trans. I met people in committed same sex relationships. I met people who were too disabled to work, sick with mental illnesses that we didn't speak about in Real Life.
I learned that not everyone has it easy. That we all have our own struggles, and it's better to be part of a community.
I've worked at a community college for the past 14 years. I've had students who were homeless. Students working three jobs and sleeping in their car between classes to try to provide for their family while hoping for something better. Students who were Muslim, Orthodox Jewish, and from places as far away as China.
So my experiences have shaped me in wanting a world where we all have a little more compassion, and understanding. That we don't hate the other.
I've just seen hatred win. And the thing I can't forgive is people who think that's a good idea. And those people include family members. Course Harmony wasn\u2019t enough for them. They were going to Revel.
She smiled, but it didn\u2019t touch her pretty green eyes. Her blondish hair had been chopped up, landing about around her ears, but I could picture it long and flowing free. She had this adorable nose, and maybe, if she really smiled, she\u2019d be pretty.
I moved up so I could sit just behind her. I knew what I looked like - hacker chic, dark clothes, heavy eye makeup, black lipstick. I wasn\u2019t just lost, I was hiding. \u201cFirst time on the train?\u201d I asked.
She actually looked back at me. \u201cYeah. How about you?\u201d
\u201cOh, no. I work at Revel.\u201d
Her eyebrows did a thing. They kinda furrowed, and it made this cute little forehead dimple. \u201cAnd...live in Harmony?\u201d
\u201cYou can\u2019t get permits to live in Revel, not if you\u2019re from the UP. Not yet anyway.\u201d Sticky thing there - Revel didn\u2019t have any agreements with the UP. It wasn\u2019t all official. And that\u2019s what made it so special.
\u201cLike it doesn\u2019t exist.\u201d A half smile lit up her cheeks. Damn, she was cute. Any other day, I\u2019d try, maybe. But we were going to Revel, and she wore a black armband. That meant - in Harmony - that she wasn\u2019t looking to \u2018play.\u2019

Oh. A charity case. Yeah, this was not going to go well.

She opened her mouth, maybe wanting to ask what the fuck was up with the name. But then the train started to slow down, making that grinding noise that made me wonder why super alien technology couldn\u2019t deal with friction. The Justin guy jumped down and nearly fell on his ass. \u201cStupid fucking thing,\u201d he shouted.
