My name is Ion Maleas, and I am a Greek / Canadian architect and urban researcher. My PhD at ENSA-Marseille is part of a European research programme (CAPA.CITY - https://www.capa-city-ensuf.eu/) examining capacity building processes in a suburban context. Within this framework, my research focuses on social housing production in the peri-urban territory of Aix-Marseille-Provence.

First, the paper provides a comparative insight on legal contexts and urban policies that have favored or limited suburban development. This state of the art highlights how the increasing focus on sustainable development has introduced the concept of suburban transformation as being an integral part of the “urban sutainability” discourse. Finally, a number of case studies of retrofitting initiatives from the three countries are examined.
