Envless is an end-to-end encrypted secrets manager that replaces .env files. It
encrypts every environment variable on your device before upload, so the server only ever stores ciphertext — then
versions, audits, and syncs those secrets across local, staging, production, and CI, with typed SDKs and a CLI for
every major language.
| How teams manage secrets | Envless | .env files | Other secrets managers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Encryption | End-to-end, encrypted on your device | Plaintext on disk | Server-side; vendor can hold keys |
| Sharing with the team | Encrypted, role-based access | Copy-paste over chat or email | Varies by platform |
| Sync across environments | Real-time across local, staging, prod, CI | Manual, per machine | Often integration-based |
| Versioning & audit log | Every change tracked | None | Varies |
| Typed SDKs | TS/Node/Bun/Deno, Python, PHP, Ruby | None | Varies |
| Time to set up | CLI in a few minutes | Instant, but unsafe at scale | Often heavy |
| Free to start | Yes, no credit card | Yes | Varies |

Yes. Every variable value is encrypted on your device before it ever reaches our servers, so neither Envless nor any third party can read it. End-to-end encryption is the default on every plan, including Free — there is no setting that turns it off.
Secrets are encrypted client-side and we store only the ciphertext — we never see your plaintext values. All traffic is encrypted in transit with TLS, two-factor authentication is mandatory on every account, and encrypted copies of your variables are replicated across five cloud providers so your data is never lost.
Yes. Because Envless holds sensitive data, two-factor authentication (2FA) is mandatory on every account and cannot be disabled.
Our SDKs and CLI are open source on GitHub at github.com/goenvless. The hosted Envless platform is not self-hostable yet, but it is something we are actively exploring.
No. The Free plan includes 1 project, 1 environment, and unlimited encrypted variables with no credit card required. You only add a payment method if you upgrade to Dev ($10/mo) or Team ($20/mo).
Most developers are running in under five minutes: install the CLI, log in, create a project, and sync your first environment variables. Typed SDKs are available for TypeScript, Node, Bun, Deno, Python, PHP, and Ruby.
Yes. Paid plans include shared workspaces with granular role-based access control per environment and a full audit log, so you always know who accessed or changed which variable — without anyone ever seeing secrets in plaintext.
