In my Operations Strategy co-op role at Thermo Fisher, I contribute to project engineering and continuous improvement initiatives in pharmaceutical manufacturing, applying chemical engineering principles such as process flow mapping while working with various manufacturing software systems. My co-op experience has shaped my career goals toward automation initiatives, data-driven decision-making, and roles that extend beyond traditional chemical engineering design.

During my co-op at Meta as a Software Engineer Intern, I built full-stack applications from the ground up, applying what I learned at U of T while gaining new skills in API integration, error handling, and accessible design. For me, the hands-on experience has been a game-changer, something you simply can’t get from the classroom alone.

Doing PEY program at U of T Engineering truly transformed my career path. I got the opportunity to work in a unique, brilliant team at t.0 technology and contribute to cutting edge research, and as an early career professional, it has given me the confidence and the tools to approach any future problem I have with resilience and with curiosity. And that’s a tool every engineer should have under their belt.

During my 16-month PEY Co-op work term, I had the privilege of being a part of the dynamic team at Accedo, a leading media solutions company, where I served as an iOS Developer. This experience not only helped me hone my technical skills but also fuelled my passion for merging computer engineering with innovative media solutions.

Battery technology is an exciting space right now in the electric vehicle industry. I saw this first-hand during my 16-month PEY Co-op at Litens where I worked on project design. The length of my work term also meant I had the freedom to lead a cell dissection and battery characterization project and see how all divisions of engineering come together as a team.

Being a PEY Co-op employer benefitted our organization greatly. For years, we have hosted many successful interns who took on tasks and projects that continuously improved the plant’s efficiency and capacity, and left many positive footprints behind. They introduced alternative ways of thinking, and new technologies or techniques that enhanced our processes and encouraged continuous growth within the plant.

The contributions that University of Toronto students have made over the years include becoming great permanent full-time staff that continues their legacy at RJC. They also help us with technical developments, bringing new perspectives, as well as innovative thinking. Having them work for us enables us to get the best talent that’s available in the city as well as the country.

One of the main reasons we’ve really enjoyed partnering with the University of Toronto and hiring PEY Co-op students is that they truly listen to industry trends. Our industry moves very fast, and we see the University actively implementing those changes into its curriculum. It’s an amazing opportunity to partner with them, and we’re really looking forward to continuing the partnership for years to come.

PEY students bring forward a renewed enthusiasm each year, as they quickly ramp up and get engaged into the core IESO work streams and projects. Over the duration of their term, students are assigned core deliverables, in addition to 'exploratory' projects that student undertake that align with their interest and IESO mandate. There is also a strong commitment from the regular IESO staff and new students to establish an effective mentorship program, and actively look for opportunities to provide exposure to other aspects of the business and the sector in general.

Our employers

  • PEY Co-op employers come from around the world, across diverse sectors.
  • Each year, 700+ employers register with PEY Co-op to hire our students.
  • With cumulative work terms of up to 20 months, hiring managers can nurture PEY Co-op students just like a core team member.
  • Industry leaders recognize the value of a U of T degree — we rank 1st in Canada and 12th in the world for graduate employability.
  • Employers are consistently impressed with the technical abilities and professional contributions of our students.
