We’ve kicked off our initiative with several larger-scale community-building events — a launch symposium, an investor forum, and a symposium exploring the intersection of AI and climate. Looking forward, we’ll continue to hold these get-togethers, but at the same time build momentum with a series of smaller-scale talks, lunch and learns, and networking socials. If you’ve got an idea for something creative, don’t hesitate to let us know.

On December 5, 2024, we held “Investing in Cleantech and Sustainable Energy Innovations,” a forum to introduce investors to our community. Investors are invited to our events large and small; we can also make concierge introductions between investors and companies when we recognize alignment. Companies can also meet investors through our mentoring program.

The Berkeley Research Infrastructure Commons, or Berkeley RIC, is a group of UC Berkeley’s core R&D facilities, startup incubator labs, and other resources that are available for shared use. Berkeley RIC facilities are available to industry users for commercial purposes under commercial rate structures and business-friendly intellectual property terms.

R&D-intensive entrepreneurs, startups, and established companies benefit from the Berkeley RIC business-friendly standardized agreements that enable companies to keep their own IP, and can be expeditiously executed by UC Berkeley’s business contracts office.

For UC Berkeley researchers, the Berkeley RIC leverages the excess capacity of shared R&D facilities by streamlining the process for companies to use these resources for commercial fees that contribute to the financial stability of the resources.

A distinguishing feature of our incubator is its integration with the UC Berkeley campus at many levels.

The Berkeley Climate Action Proof-of-Concept Program (BCAPP) empowers UC Berkeley faculty to accelerate climate solutions from lab to market through targeted funding, mentorship, and commercialization support.

The BioEnginuity Impact Grant supports doctoral students working in STEM fields with an emphasis on bioconvergence — the intersection of life sciences with physical sciences, engineering, and/or data science, who have an interest in translating their research to solve important societal problems.

The Bakar Fellows Program at UC Berkeley accelerates important research discoveries and innovations out of the lab and into the hands of people who need them most.
