Prelude: Game of Thrones Theme Composer: Ramin Djawadi Arranger: Bianca Sheng Conductor: Shenze Zhang
1. Lemon
Composer: Yonezu Kenshi Arranger: Bianca Sheng Soloist: Bianca Sheng Conductor: Shenze Zhang
Lemon is a song composed and sung by Kenshi Yonezu himself, and is used as the theme song of “Unnatural Death”. The theme of the TV series is related to death. Kenshi Yonezu wants to make people pay attention to “death” through songs. During the composition of the song, his body and mind were already exhausted, and his grandfather passed away at that time. This made him rethink death, and he had a deeper understanding of death. As a song written to commemorate his grandfather, he incorporated his grief for the death of his relatives and his own insights into life and death.
When writing this work, I changed the whole song to the key suitable for female voices and let the tenor sing the harmony part so that the whole work is better integrated. For the soprano part I added a special melody, making the whole track sound more interesting and less sad.
(Late Autumn)
Composer: Tamaki Koji Arranger: Martin Shen Soloist: Lucy Yuan Conductor: Estee Chen
Late Autumn is a song by Zhang Xueyou, which is included in his 1993’s Mandarin album “Kiss goodbye”. Along with his Cantonese-version Li Xiang Lan, both were adapted from Please Don’t Go Away composed and sung by Tamaki Koji.
The original song Please Don’t Go Away is the theme song for TV series Bye, Li Xiang Lan, a Chinese-Japanese co-production in 1989. The melody, as if weeping and complaining, chants the Li Xiang Lan’s tortuous destiny – a superstar becoming a victim of politics and war.
Despite the various adaptions in different languages and by different artists over the past several decades, none of them deviates from the theme of “sorrow of separation”. We are deeply touched upon hearing the song during the pandemics, where many people are forced to parted from their loved ones.
When performing this song, we will start with the original slow and sorrow melody in the first half to express the deep sadness and longing, and transition to a relatively lively rhythm in the second for an account of relief and hope.
3. You’ll See
Composer: Tizzy Bac Arranger: Tony Wang Soloist: Tony Wang Conductor: Estee Chen
This is a song by the Taiwanese band Tizzy Bac, which is included in the album “I Think What You Are Like Now Is All My Fault”. Hui Ting’s piano is sometimes jumping and sometimes melodious. I highly recommend everyone to listen to this album. Hui Ting’s voice is very distinctive. After listening to this album, I feel very dreamy, lonely, and free and easy.
4. Say Something
Composers: Ian Axel, Chad King, Mike Campbell Arranger: Bianca Sheng, Pentatonix Soloist: Nick Sha, Vivian Huang Conductor: Bianca Sheng
5. Dear Theodosia
Composer: Lin-Manuel Miranda Arranger: Yihan Wang Soloist: Troy Zhang, Henry Yang Conductor: Estee Chen
Dear Theodosia is a song from the musical Hamilton. Different from other rap songs with complicated orchestra arrangements within the musical, Dear Theodosia is very simple yet very sweet, depicting the fatherly love Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr had for their children. It’s also a song that showcases the unusually gentle side of two political figures. In my eyes, parental love is the simplest and purest form of emotion. So, when I was arranging the ensemble, I adopted the simple chord progression from the original arrangement but emphasized on composing melody for some voice parts. Since this song tells the story of fatherly love, I deliberately composed the prominent counter melody for altos as a representation of motherly love just so the idea of family can be complete. When I was working on this song, these melodies weren’t really planned but instead just flowed into my head. Perhaps, my homesickness was already embedded in this song.
6. 太空人
(Spaceman)
Composer: Wu Qing-Feng Arranger: Estee Chen Soloist: Xinqing Huang, Wenxin (Jacqueline) Tu Conductor: Estee Chen
Spaceman is composed by Wu Qingfeng and narrates a moving story of unrequited love. The Music Video of the original song combines reality and fairy tales. In the MV, the cartoonist had a crush on the girl who lived in the same apartment with him. The two gradually got acquainted and experienced a lot of happiness and shared a lot of troubles together. The cartoonist really liked the girl, but soon found out that this girl had a long-distance boyfriend, so he had to give up sadly and drew the story into a comic. The heroine likes orange the most, so orange is used extensively in the comic.
The comic narrates a story about a spaceman returning to the Earth alone, recalling the days wandering in space, dancing and chatting with the heroine. He had to return to the Earth from the depletion of water and oxygen in space. There is a sentence in the lyrics, “Maybe you will see it clearly in the dark night at some point, I was there lighting up for you”, which is my favorite sentence.
The second part of the performance mashes up four pieces from Sodagreen, as the arranger Estee’s continuation of the spaceman’s tale, turning the sad ending into a happy one. The arrangement of the original song is very dreamy and the chords are mainly major, which sounds very refreshing and warm.

7. Baby,
(Baby, goodbye)
Composer: Pu Shu (Adapted by Zhou Shen) Arranger: Estee Chen Soloist: Estee Chen Conductor: Shenze Zhang
Baby, До свидания is a song composed and lyrics by Pu Shu, adapted by Zhou Shen and sung in Singer, a Chinese variety show. The song begins with the famous Russian folk song “Red Plum Blossom”, which tells about the troubles of a Russian girl who loves a boy but can’t tell him about it. The song immediately turned into a brisk jazz style, narrating various love stories that happened in a Czech inn called “Dania“. Strange travelers and wanderers stayed here, met each other, and looked for company in this inn. Among them were musicians and dancers who were living alone in the Czech Republic; they have desires, hesitations, and dreams, trying to survive and thrive in a foreign country, but still suffer from loneliness. The young men and women fell in love in the inn, but separated eventually because of personal turmoil and anxiety, leaving only empty hotel rooms and endless stories that were composed into songs. The overall song is in a minor key, with a touch of sadness and helplessness permeating the keynote. До свидания means “goodbye” in Russian. Its pronunciation is “dasvidanya”, which is a homonym for the inn’s name. I was deeply moved when I heard Zhou Shen sing this song on Singer, and was shocked by its exquisite arrangement: “Red Plum Blossom” is a folk song while “Baby, До свидания” is a rock song , but the two styles mix well. The bel canto and jazz singing are both styles that I like very much.
(Ashes From Fireworks)
Composer: Xi Lou Arranger: Mindy Zhang Soloist: Rachel Gu Conductor: Bianca Sheng
“Ashes From Fireworks” is a song sung by Hua Chenyu, composed by Lin Xi, composed by Xilou, arranged by Xilou and Zheng Nan, and included in Hua Chenyu’s “The Gift of Quasimodo”. British keyboard accompaniment, with drums and bass, as well as the looming piano sound, blends with Hua Chenyu’s unique singing voice. The treble is strong and unrestrained while maintaining a psychedelic and ethereal feeling.
(The Last Blossom)
Composer: C.Y.Kong Arranger: Martin Shen Soloist: Amelia Peng Conductor: Estee Chen
The Last Blossom is a song written by Lin Xi and sung by Faye Wong. The lyrics start with an analogy about ants, saying that “their deviation is not even by one inch”, which corresponds to the following lyrics, “the difference between people is no bigger than the difference between the sky and the earth”. Since everyone is the same, don’t hold on to those who fail you. However, there are many people who treat the people they like as gods and idols. They lack reason and let their fantasies drive them. In the end, the relationship breaks down and causes a huge psychological gap. In this time of setbacks, people’s feelings and passions are slowly consumed and finally wiped out, so that when you meet people with good feelings, you will feel the crush, but you also know you won’t have the courage to start a new relationship. Everyone you meet will look like a uniform ant, which can’t stir up any emotion in your heart.
10. Omar Sharif
Composer: David Yazbek Arranger: Yihan Wang Soloist: Yihan Wang Conductor: Bianca Sheng
Omar Sharif is a song from the musical The Band’s Visit. The musical tells the story of an Egyptian orchestra landed in a wrong Israeli town in the middle of the desert due to miscommunication. After the local coffee shop owner Dina took them in for a night’s stay, their lives were intertwined in unexpected ways. Omar Sharif happens in the middle of the plot where Dina and the orchestra leader Tewfiq had a “date-like” conversation. Dina recalls her childhood memory of listening to the Egyptian singer Umm Kulthum and watching the Egyptian actor Omar Sharif to express her long-time fascination with Egyptian culture. The same passion drew two people coming from different cultural backgrounds together and Dina gradually realized she had different feelings towards Tewfiq as the song went on. The Band’s Visit was the first musical I saw on Broadway in person, and I was lucky enough to watch Katrina Lenk performing Omar Sharif, which just replayed again and again in my head and I was deeply mesmerized. When I was re-arranging this song, I followed most of the complicated chords and arabic musical elements in the original song. Unlike the other song I arranged for this concert, Dear Theodosia, I didn’t create a prominent counter melody in any of the voice parts. Instead, I viewed the ensemble as a whole to create the sound I desired collectively, which led to the difficulty and high standard for the solo and all voice parts. I hope our rendition can bring you to the center of the imagined desert, appreciating the power of music.
《Omar Sharif》选自音乐剧《The Band’s Visit》。
(The Legend of Joe Hisaishi)
Composer: Joe Hisaishi Arranger: Bianca Sheng, Estee Chen Soloist: Amelia Peng, Bianca Sheng, Frank Dong, Estee Chen Conductor: Shenze Zhang
Hisaishi Joe is a famous composer in Japan, and a composer that I personally admire and love very much. His works have a great influence on me. I hope to express these works’ emotions in a different way through PennEnchord’s singing. For this arrangement, I combined seven of Hisaishi Joe’s famous works including Ponyo, My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki’s Delivery Service, Summer, Spirited Away, Laputa in the Sky and Princess Mononoke. This piece contains feelings of joy, sadness, playfulness, longing and so on. And in order to highlight the beauty of PennEnchord singers’ voices, I also added a part where different parts take turns to sing the melody of Spirited Away‘s theme song, showing the unique advantages of each voice part. In Summer, I also added bbox as a rhythmic embellishment, highlighting the cheerful summer atmosphere.
