From Proto-Nuclear Polynesian *mata-qi- from Proto-Polynesian *mata “eye, point” – thus also doublet of mata – likely through an intermediate like *mata-a-lima (corresponding to mata a-rima ~ mata a-ringa).[1] Compare also with matikao “bud” (from *mata-qi-kao “point of growth”) and matihao.
