Etymology
[edit]Formerly ‘bastard’, compare with Albanian kopil, Byzantine Greek κόπελος (kópelos). Alternatively an old ultimately paleo-Balkan substrate word. Compare Aromanian cochil, Megleno-Romanian copil (“bastard”), cupilaș (“child”).
