From Proto-Somaloid *ʕaws, from Proto-East Cushitic *ʕawš, derived from Proto-Cushitic *ʕaw- (grass, foliage). Compare also cawl.

Cognate with Maay ees, Garre aas, Tunni ees, Rendille h'os, Jiiddu is, Daasanach iish, Saho cashsho, Afar qayso, Sidamo hayisso, Tsamai ʕaš (corn) and possibly Oromo ees (oat).
