Etymology

[edit]

From Late Middle High German *tasse, which is not attested as a simplex before the 16th c., but required by the diminutive tesschichyn (mid-15th c.). Further from Middle French tasse (14th c.), from Arabic طَاس (ṭās), variant of طَسْت (ṭast), from Middle Persian tšt' (tašt). Cognate with Modern French tasse, Dutch tas, dialectal English tass. Distantly related with Docht, Technologie, Text.
