How ruthenium and osmium anticancer compounds recognise chromatin in distinct ways

An international team of researchers, led by Prof. Curtis Davey from the JU Małopolska Centre of Biotechnology, which also includes Prof. Ursula Röthlisberger, Dr. Andrea Levy, and Prof. Paul Dyson from the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne in Switzerland as well as other collaborators from around the globe, have discovered structural principles that determine how a promising family of ruthenium- and osmium-based compounds selectively recognise chromatin.

University Hospital joins the elite group of European research centres

The Department of Diabetology, Internal Medicine and Metabolic Diseases at the University Hospital in Kraków has joined an elite group of European centres by obtaining the INNODIA Clinical Trial Site status. The accreditation confirms the highest standards in the conduct of clinical research and recognises the department’s excellence in both scientific and clinical activities.

JU archaeologists discover a forgotten World War I cemetery

Another season of archaeological research conducted by the JU Institute of Archaeology has come to an end in Szczawne. The aim of the project was to locate a military cemetery holding the remains of soldiers killed during battles fought in the Carpathians between 1914 and 1915. The excavations focused on a small patch of flat terrain near the site of a former Eastern Orthodox church. It was there that researchers suspected the forgotten necropolis might be located.

What lies beneath the city? Researchers create an atlas of RNA viruses

Thanks to the efforts of Dr hab. inż. Paweł Łabaj, Prof. UJ, Kraków has participated since 2020 in the global City Sampling Day (gCSD), an international initiative organised by the MetaSUB consortium. Its aim is to collect samples from urban environments in order to identify what is present in the city microbiome and to improve preparedness for emerging epidemiological threats.

Polish-Belgian research on human brain

Jagiellonian University scientists in collaboration with partners from Ghent University will carry out international research into how the brain monitors the results of human activity and processes feedback. The study will be funded from the OPUS LAP grant worth 1.5 million zlotys. The Polish team is led by Dr hab. Magdalena Senderecka, Prof. UJ from the Jagiellonian University Faculty of Philosophy.

A modern brain research centre: neuroscience of the future

22 July marks World Brain Day, a celebration established in 1957 to commemorate the founding of the World Federation of Neurology during the International Neurological Congress in Brussels. It is also an excellent opportunity to highlight that, for several years now, the Jagiellonian University has been home to the JU Centre for Brain Research, one of the most advanced facilities of its kind in Poland.
