Heart failure remains one of the most serious challenges of modern medicine. After a myocardial infarction, lost cardiomyocytes are not effectively replaced by new ones, and the resulting scar leads to progressive deterioration of cardiac function. Although transplantation is effective in extreme cases, its use is limited by organ shortage, which has for years motivated the development of regenerative medicine and the search for alternative therapeutic strategies.
An international team of researchers led by Chase L. Beisel, Dirk W. Heinz, and Ryan N. Jackson, with collaborators from Germany, Austria, France, the United States, and Poland, discovered an entirely new CRISPR-based defence mechanism in bacteria. The findings were published in the prestigious journal Nature.
Scientists from the JU Faculty of Physics, Astronomy and Applied Computer Science and their collaborators from Ghent University and Lviv Polytechnic have developed innovative surfaces for applications in biosensors and cell cultures. These surfaces combine two functions: they enable controlled binding of significant amounts of a selected functional protein, while simultaneously blocking unwanted adsorption of other proteins.
The pace of biological ageing varies greatly among individuals, and one of its most visible signs is facial wrinkles. People of the same chronological age can differ significantly in facial appearance and be perceived as younger or older. Skin condition is considered a reliable indicator of biological ageing and can serve as an excellent model for analysing general ageing processes.
The team of Prof. Włodzimierz Zwonek from the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science of the Jagiellonian University received a grant worth 950 thousand zlotys to carry out research in the field of complex analysis, partial differentia equations, geometry, and pluripotential theory. The project envisages collaboration of three leading research groups from Central Europe, representing, besides the oldest Polish University, the universities of Vienna and Wuppertal.
Prof. Ewa Zuba-Surma from the Jagiellonian University Faculty of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Biotechnology became winner of the investor pitch at a presentation of innovative solutions in Silicon Valley and at the leading Californian universities, such as Stanford University, University of California, Berkeley, and the California Institute of Regenerative Medicine during a study visit within the framework the programme ‘Top 1000 Innovators of Poland in Silicon Valley’.
A research team led by professor Grzegorz Dubin from the JU Małopolska Centre of Biotechnology (MCB), together with collaborators from the JU Faculty of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Biotechnology, has uncovered how the peroxisomal import machinery of Trypanosoma cruzi – a human pathogen - adapts structural heterogeneity to transport folded enzymes across membranes. The findings, recently published in Nature Communications, provide a detailed structural insight into this essential biological process.
On 12 December 2025 the winners of Wacaław Felczak and Henryk Wereszycki Prize were announced at a ceremony in the International Cultural Centre in Kraków. The prize is awarded annually, alternately to Polish and foreign researchers, in recognition of outstanding publications on the history of the Central-East Europe and its relationship with Poland from the Middle Ages to the present day.
In November 2024, the Australian parliament passed legislation banning the use of social media by individuals under the age of 16. Although the law came into force a year later, some platforms had already begun deactivating younger users’ accounts. These changes will affect hundreds of thousands of accounts, raising the question of whether we're witnessing the start of a global digital revolution. Dr Aleksandra Powierska from the JU Institute of Audiovisual Arts comments on these new rules.
Dr Renata Rajtar-Salwa, Dr hab. Magdalena Szopa, Prof. UJ, and Dr Radosław Pach have completed the prestigious Polish Clinical Scholars Research Training one-year programme run by the Harvard Medical School Postgraduate Medical Education. The certificate award ceremony was held in late November in Boston.
AI-based chatbots are capable of genuinely changing voters’ attitudes—and they do so more effectively than traditional political advertising. Even a short conversation with a language model can shift voting preferences by several percentage points, according to an international study published in Nature. The study was co-authored by Dr Gabriela Czarnek from the JU Faculty of Philosophy.
Developing solutions to support transformation processes for biodiversity conservation will be the aim of an international project coordinated by and led by Dr Dominik Kaim from the JU Faculty of Geography and Geology. In total, four teams involving Polish researchers received grants within the framework of the BiodivTransform call.
