This study aims to identify the communication strategies adopted by companies to communicate their financial results to investors. We conducted a textual analysis of the letters to shareholders, downloaded from the annual reports of companies listed in the 2020 Standard & Poors's 500 Index. We performed a topic modeling and sentiment analysis procedure, to highlights the main topics and relative emotions. Then, we observed how these findings combined with different performance indicators. Our approach shows promising results in the effective analysis of corporate reports, as the financial narratives are of fundamental importance for determining market trends and influencing investment behavior.

We built a corpus of articles and blog entries from the websites of acknowledged think tanks of neoliberal orientation. We implement a series of state-of-the-art algorithms and corpus linguistic methodologies to detect ideological markers and constructions, domain-specific concepts, and seed words associated with the discursive conventions of neoliberalism. Topic modeling uncovered clusters of terms that defined discursive fields, from which we selected a sample of key concepts. Furthermore, we custom trained the word embeddings model in our corpus to detect the semantic fields underpinning neoliberal stereotypes. The vectorization of sentences revealed repetitive patterns formulated around the concepts, thus highlighting the mechanical nature of an ideology in its discursive function. Although our preliminary results confirm and deepen our understanding of expected ideological assumptions such as the establishment of a dominant market as a sole solution and solidarity to all business—and, more specifically, to “small business”—the analysis didn’t reveal widespread discourses about specific social strata, for example, people receiving public welfare. However, subtle formulations and metaphors such as the topos of burden as regards the welfare state or the topos of war concerning poverty emerged through our analysis outlining commonsensical discursive frameworks.

How much of a threat to privacy is the collection and processing of data by third parties? How much can this violation contribute to the formation of problematic social situations? On the occasion of the extensive methods of surveillance and data collection of citizens in the global crisis of COVID-19 this study presents the data of the recent international research on the use of the Internet by the World Internet Project on attitudes and behaviors of individuals regarding online privacy and surveillance. The aim is to trace whether and to what extent the recorded concern about the violation of privacy intersects with an expanding acceptance of its absence.

Education plays a pivotal role in this process and presents many challenges, especially with regard to the practice learning. However, arranging practice learning for students carries the challenge of finding qualified mentors/practice assessors, finding sufficient numbers of placements for all students, and addressing the risks associated with the safety and well-being of students and trainees. An innovative approach to experiencing practice learning is through simulation- and game-based education where students engage in an imitation of a real-world scenario in playful ways. How much of a threat to privacy is the collection and processing of data by third parties and what do people think about it? On the occasion of the extensive methods of surveilling citizens and collecting their data, this study attempts to contribute new empirical data evidence from the international research on the use of the Internet by the World Internet Project on attitudes and behaviors of individuals regarding online privacy and surveillance. The aim is to determine whether and to what extent the recorded concerns about the violation of privacy intersects with a growing acceptance of its very absence.

More specifically, we experimented with distributional semantics along with several Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques and machine learning algorithms in order to extract conceptual dictionaries and “seed” words. Our findings show that sentence embeddings reveal repetitive patterns constructed around the given concepts and highlight the mechanical character of an ideology in its function of providing solutions, policies and constructing stereotypes. This work introduces a novel pipeline for computer-assisted research in discourse analysis and ideology.

An immediate advantage of interactive simulations and games is the provision of risk-free environments in cases where consequences are too costly or hazardous in real life; with a simulated practice game there are no consequences outside the boundaries of the game environment. Responding to the above challenges, the Play2Do project (http://www.play2do.eu) develops a 3D gaming environment that provides a safe and readily accessible environment where students studying to become teachers of people with intellectual disabilities can learn by interacting with non-player characters in a simulation of real world scenarios. The approach uses a more modern, constructivist approach to education and represents an example of innovative education in a digital era, particularly a computer-games era. The core constituent of the gaming/simulation environment are the real-world scenarios. In our work, we engaged special education experts from the UK, Greece, Italy, Bulgaria and Cyprus and created first a sound understanding of what exact needs are addressed by the simulation environment and second a set of six well-defined scenarios. For instance, dealing with a case in the autism spectrum, the player faces certain behaviour patterns in a simulation setting and finds his/her way through the scenes by interpreting the situation and responding appropriately. A key research finding is that gaming and virtual simulations in practice learning may be better used as a tool to give teachers a certain level of confidence and knowledge but not as a replacement of actual practice.

We study the main argument theories and the state of the art in argument mining. Our technique aims at the automatic recognition of arguments through the implementation of lexical indicators and the extraction of argumentative units using text mining tools from R Studio. For our experiments we used a sample of editorials from five newspapers and a sample of texts from the Hellenic Parliament Proceedings. Our goal was the initiation of a basis for further research and analysis concerning the use of argument and most importantly, the way arguments are shaped and implemented in public discourse.

Why would mainstream European parties become more populist in recent years? Some scholars argue that the expansion of right-wing populism in Europe points to the global economic crisis which has left undeniable consequences on a European scale. Others believe that the reducing ideological distinctiveness of parties would cause a change in the content of their communication shifting the competition from policy to image and emotion. This study proposes a different and innovative way of studying and understanding populism as a key constitutive dimension of modern political communication focuses on automatic textual data analysis. Most discursive approaches to populism follow manual content analysis based mainly on rubrics designed to assign grades to texts according to different indicators associated to populism. Having vast amounts of digital text in our disposal we can implement automatic methods and experiment with both dictionary and machine learning techniques in order to determine the benefits of each method to not only detect populism but also to outline its evolution. Furthermore, we are able by altering the focus of research to highlight the physiognomy of populist discursive formations, determine the ideological arena it comes from and examine not only the presence but also the lack of specific features and topics such as gender which has been a major emerging topic in recent literature.
