However, the adoption of the technology has had varying levels of success. Using a sample of 300 respondents, the study randomly assigned participants into three conditions and provided different information on how they would be reimbursed by their bank in case of fraud. In the three conditions, this study analyzed how prior consumer knowledge about e-wallet technology along with perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, and trust may be related to the attitudes on the use of e-wallets, which subsequently relates to the intentions to use this technology. The findings suggest that consumer knowledge about e-wallet technology relates to perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, and trust, which are known to influence attitude and behavioral intention to adopt and use new technologies such as the e-wallet. Mindfulness has received considerable interest due to its positive outcomes for individuals howev... more Mindfulness has received considerable interest due to its positive outcomes for individuals however our understanding of how it may also result in positive outcomes for organizations is not fully understood. Using data collected from university academics ( N = 255) in Northern Cyprus, we examine mindfulness as a factor that leads to Organizational Citizenship Behavior (OCB) and Innovative Work Behaviors (IWB). We expect that eudaimonic well-being serves as the mechanism that links mindfulness to IWB and OCB. Our results show mindfulness improves eudaimonic well-being. Eudaimonic well-being fully mediates the Mindfulness—IWB relationship and partially mediates the Mindfulness—OCB relationship. Since the COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of OCB and IWB for universities, our study has important implications for university managers and policymakers.

Extant research investigated mindfulness as a trait and treated it as a predictor or moderator. However, we model mindfulness as a state that can be altered by events such as bullying and thus, we conceptualize it as a mediator that is drained by bullying and thus influences emotional exhaustion. Our model is based on the Conservation of Resources theory and tested with data from 426 full-time employees in the hospitality industry in Zanzibar using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modelling. Our results show that workplace bullying leads to employee emotional exhaustion and that mindfulness state is a mechanism through which bullying is related to exhaustion. The results provide managerial implications for practitioners to develop work environments to reduce emotional exhaustion and research implications for scholars about the role of mindfulness in dealing with adverse work environments.

The antecedents of sociocultural adjustment are also investigated. The study used a questionnaire administered to a sample of 85 international faculty members working at five universities in North Cyprus in order to investigate the factors that influence their cultural adjustment in terms of work, interaction and general adjustment. The study also investigates how the facets of socio cultural adjustment may influence a faculty member's intention to stay in their current institution. Data analysis and hypothesis testing was carried out using a path analysis in SPSS AMOS 20. The purpose of this study is to show how autonomy, competence and meaningful work serve as mechan... more The purpose of this study is to show how autonomy, competence and meaningful work serve as mechanisms through which opportunity entrepreneurship leads to higher levels of wellbeing, and how this relationship may be altered by the country’s level of individualism. Global Entrepreneurship Monitor data for 37 countries and 14,514 individuals that are active in early stage entrepreneurship are used to investigate the relationship between opportunity entrepreneurship and wellbeing. To account for the nested nature of our data, we use a multilevel model to assess how factors of autonomy and competence as components of self-determination and meaningful work as a component of decent work mediate the opportunity entrepreneurship and wellbeing relationship. We also test the moderating effects of individualism cultural dimension at the country level on the relationship between opportunity entrepreneurship and wellbeing.

This article presents an “episodic process model” that accounts for both the bright and possible dark sides of participation. The model explains how PDM might boost employee hope and self-efficacy, which in turn may lead to two distinct work outcomes–job satisfaction and behavior.Design/methodology/approachIn order to test the model, data (n = 269) were collected from bank employees in two waves. How and when mindfulness inhibits emotional exhaustion: a moderated mediation model

Clinical studies have suggested the importance of mindfulness in curbing psychological illbeing. ... more Clinical studies have suggested the importance of mindfulness in curbing psychological illbeing. However, this has been overlooked in the occupational setting, especially in some service sectors where employees are more prone to work-related stress and burnout. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to examine the indirect relationship between mindfulness and emotional exhaustion through psychological distress, and the moderating role of workplace bullying. Employees in the North Cyprus-based hospitality sector (Study 1) and in the Nigeria-based healthcare sector (Study 2) completed surveys during a time-lagged data collection procedure. The results of both studies indicated that mindfulness could significantly reduce psychological distress and subsequently emotional exhaustion when workplace bullying was low to moderate. The current work extends the extant mindfulness and occupational wellbeing literature by shedding more light on the underlying and conditional mechanisms explaining the salutary role of mindfulness on wellbeing. In the same vein, it also expands the burnout and workplace bullying body of knowledge that is particularly understudied in sub-Saharan Africa. Additional theoretical and practical implications of the findings are discussed further, alongside limitations and future studies directions.

Although the ongoing political problems in Cyprus provide additional challenges, the number and activities of women ecotourism entrepreneurs demonstrated an inspiring growth over the last decade in the northern part of Cyprus. The well-being and flourishing of these women entrepreneurs influence their participation and further involvement in the sector. Psychological empowerment plays a significant role in achieving a flourishing society, and our results reveal that ecotourism can be used to create positive change in women’s lives. We study how the mindsets and flourishing levels of these ecotourism entrepreneurs are related and how empowerment can change the direction of this relationship. Data was obtained from 300 full time employees in a private airline company in Jordan. The data was collected in three rounds, each separated by one-week time-lag. Structural equation modeling was used to test the proposed relationships and revealed that both servant leadership and HPWS practices were positively linked with employee satisfaction and retention, which were used as indicators of organizational sustainability. This study considers both the positive and possible negative impacts of high performance work sys... more This study considers both the positive and possible negative impacts of high performance work systems (HPWS) by investigating their relationship with job demands, job satisfaction and job search behavior. The parallel mediation effect of job satisfaction and physiological job demand on the link between HPWS and job search behavior is also examined. Data was collected in two phases from 22 branches of Iranian private banks from 269 employees in 2016. Results from a covariancebased structural equation modeling (CB-SEM) shows that HPWS positively relates to job satisfaction, physiological job demand and job search behavior. Job satisfaction negatively relates to job search behavior and also mediates the link between HPWS and job search behavior. However, job demand did not have any mediation effect on the link, which means that employees exposed to high job demand do not necessarily engage in the search for alternative jobs. The moderatedregression results reveal that the relationship between cash conversion cycle and profitability ismoderated by firm size. As the firm size gets smaller and the cash conversion cycle gets longer,the returns on assets decreases. When the firm size gets bigger and the cash conversion cycle getslonger, on the other hand, the returns on assets increases. In this context, reducing the lengthof cash conversion cycle has a positive impact on profitability for only small and medium-sizedfirms. Accordingly, this study concludes that small and also medium-sized firms, contrary to bigfirms, should reduce the length of cash conversion cycle in order to increase profitability.

ABSTRACT The present study proposes and tests a moderated mediation model investigating the direc... more ABSTRACT The present study proposes and tests a moderated mediation model investigating the direct and mediated effect of workplace bullying on employee emotional exhaustion via psychological distress and resilience with mindfulness as a moderating variable, under the lens of COR and JD-R theory. Structural Equation Modeling was used to analyze data from 252 4- and 5-star hotels’ full-time employees in North Cyprus. The results show that workplace bullying significantly predicted emotional exhaustion, and resilience and psychological distress partially mediated this relationship. However, employee mindfulness did not significantly moderate the effect of workplace bullying on emotional exhaustion, nor its indirect effect via resilience. Implications are discussed further.

Design/methodology/approach Surveys were collected from managers and employees of 12 five star hotels operating in Northern Cyprus. A sample of 176 employees and 40 managers from 40 departments responded to the survey. As the employees are nested in the departments, a multilevel analysis using hierarchical linear modelling was utilised. Findings Effects of higher incremental mindsets of managers on the OCBs of their subordinates are mediated by the coaching behaviour of the managers. Effective coaching serves as a mechanism through which the incremental mindsets lead to higher levels of employee OCBs. The paper investigates whether cognitive style congruence of managers and employees on the analyt... more The paper investigates whether cognitive style congruence of managers and employees on the analytic-intuitive dimension influence employee communication satisfaction. The cognitive style and employee communication satisfaction was measured in 136 manager/employee dyads. Polynomial regression and surface analysis were used to analyze communication satisfaction under four conditions. First, an analytic congruence condition where both manager and employee are analytical, second, an intuitive congruence condition where both are intuitive, third, an incongruence condition where an intuitive manager manages an analytic employee, and fourth, another incongruence condition where an analytic manager manages an intuitive employee. Results supported the similarity effect hypothesis indicating that congruence increases employee communication satisfaction in general. Furthermore, the surface analysis also allowed us to see that the communication satisfaction is higher in the intuitive congruence condition. The study did not support the hypothesis that in incongruent dyads intuitive managers are preferred.

This study investigates how the level of procedural justice climate (PJC) in a group may reduce o... more This study investigates how the level of procedural justice climate (PJC) in a group may reduce or increase the impact of coaching behaviour of department managers on the organizational citizenship behaviours (OCBs) of their subordinates in the hospitality sector. The sample consists of 40 department managers and 176 employees of 12 five star hotels operating in Northern Cyprus. A multilevel analysis using hierarchical linear modelling (HLM) was utilized due to the nested nature of employees in their corresponding departments. Effective coaching is especially more important in departments where procedural justice climate is low. When the PJC is low, the role of effective coaching becomes imperative for OCBs of employees. In line with the substitutes for leadership theory, the higher levels of PJC serve as a substitute for coaching.

As the increasing internationalization of higher education creates competition among the universi... more As the increasing internationalization of higher education creates competition among the universities, many institutions are making use of social media communities to attract and retain students. We surveyed 215 users of the Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) Facebook page to investigate how it influences their identification with the university community and the university brand. We further investigate how this identification influences the trust and loyalty to the institution and leads to positive behaviors such as promoting the university to their peers as an active member of the university community. Our results show that the perceived strength of the Facebook community is related to the identification with the university community and the university brand which in turn are related to trust and loyalty. Higher loyalty is linked to citizenship behaviors such as increased contribution to the educational process labeled in-role behaviors and providing positive word of mouth about the university labeled extra-role behaviors. With the challenges of a diverse and global student body which is expected to continue increasing, universities can benefit from use of social media in developing identity, loyalty and trust.

The antecedents of sociocultural adjustment are also investigated. The study used a questionnaire administered to a sample of 85 international faculty members working at five universities in North Cyprus in order to investigate the factors that influence their cultural adjustment in terms of work, interaction and general adjustment. The study also investigates how the facets of socio cultural adjustment may influence a faculty member's intention to stay in their current institution. Global Entrepreneurship Monitor data for 37 countries and 14,514 individuals that are active in early stage entrepreneurship are used to investigate the relationship between opportunity entrepreneurship and wellbeing. To account for the nested nature of our data, we use a multilevel model to assess how factors of autonomy and competence as components of self-determination and meaningful work as a component of decent work mediate the opportunity entrepreneurship and wellbeing relationship. We also test the moderating effects of individualism cultural dimension at the country level on the relationship between opportunity entrepreneurship and wellbeing.

However, this has been overlooked in the occupational setting, especially in some service sectors where employees are more prone to work-related stress and burnout. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to examine the indirect relationship between mindfulness and emotional exhaustion through psychological distress, and the moderating role of workplace bullying. Employees in the North Cyprus-based hospitality sector (Study 1) and in the Nigeria-based healthcare sector (Study 2) completed surveys during a time-lagged data collection procedure. The results of both studies indicated that mindfulness could significantly reduce psychological distress and subsequently emotional exhaustion when workplace bullying was low to moderate. The current work extends the extant mindfulness and occupational wellbeing literature by shedding more light on the underlying and conditional mechanisms explaining the salutary role of mindfulness on wellbeing. In the same vein, it also expands the burnout and workplace bullying body of knowledge that is particularly understudied in sub-Saharan Africa. Additional theoretical and practical implications of the findings are discussed further, alongside limitations and future studies directions.

The parallel mediation effect of job satisfaction and physiological job demand on the link between HPWS and job search behavior is also examined. Data was collected in two phases from 22 branches of Iranian private banks from 269 employees in 2016. Results from a covariancebased structural equation modeling (CB-SEM) shows that HPWS positively relates to job satisfaction, physiological job demand and job search behavior. Job satisfaction negatively relates to job search behavior and also mediates the link between HPWS and job search behavior. However, job demand did not have any mediation effect on the link, which means that employees exposed to high job demand do not necessarily engage in the search for alternative jobs. The moderatedregression results reveal that the relationship between cash conversion cycle and profitability ismoderated by firm size. As the firm size gets smaller and the cash conversion cycle gets longer,the returns on assets decreases. When the firm size gets bigger and the cash conversion cycle getslonger, on the other hand, the returns on assets increases. In this context, reducing the lengthof cash conversion cycle has a positive impact on profitability for only small and medium-sizedfirms. Accordingly, this study concludes that small and also medium-sized firms, contrary to bigfirms, should reduce the length of cash conversion cycle in order to increase profitability.

ABSTRACT The present study proposes and tests a moderated mediation model investigating the direc... more ABSTRACT The present study proposes and tests a moderated mediation model investigating the direct and mediated effect of workplace bullying on employee emotional exhaustion via psychological distress and resilience with mindfulness as a moderating variable, under the lens of COR and JD-R theory. Structural Equation Modeling was used to analyze data from 252 4- and 5-star hotels’ full-time employees in North Cyprus. The results show that workplace bullying significantly predicted emotional exhaustion, and resilience and psychological distress partially mediated this relationship. However, employee mindfulness did not significantly moderate the effect of workplace bullying on emotional exhaustion, nor its indirect effect via resilience. Implications are discussed further.

A sample of 176 employees and 40 managers from 40 departments responded to the survey. As the employees are nested in the departments, a multilevel analysis using hierarchical linear modelling was utilised. Findings Effects of higher incremental mindsets of managers on the OCBs of their subordinates are mediated by the coaching behaviour of the managers. The cognitive style and employee communication satisfaction was measured in 136 manager/employee dyads. Polynomial regression and surface analysis were used to analyze communication satisfaction under four conditions. First, an analytic congruence condition where both manager and employee are analytical, second, an intuitive congruence condition where both are intuitive, third, an incongruence condition where an intuitive manager manages an analytic employee, and fourth, another incongruence condition where an analytic manager manages an intuitive employee. Results supported the similarity effect hypothesis indicating that congruence increases employee communication satisfaction in general. Furthermore, the surface analysis also allowed us to see that the communication satisfaction is higher in the intuitive congruence condition. The study did not support the hypothesis that in incongruent dyads intuitive managers are preferred.

The sample consists of 40 department managers and 176 employees of 12 five star hotels operating in Northern Cyprus. A multilevel analysis using hierarchical linear modelling (HLM) was utilized due to the nested nature of employees in their corresponding departments. Effective coaching is especially more important in departments where procedural justice climate is low. When the PJC is low, the role of effective coaching becomes imperative for OCBs of employees. In line with the substitutes for leadership theory, the higher levels of PJC serve as a substitute for coaching.

As the increasing internationalization of higher education creates competition among the universi... more As the increasing internationalization of higher education creates competition among the universities, many institutions are making use of social media communities to attract and retain students. We surveyed 215 users of the Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) Facebook page to investigate how it influences their identification with the university community and the university brand. We further investigate how this identification influences the trust and loyalty to the institution and leads to positive behaviors such as promoting the university to their peers as an active member of the university community. Our results show that the perceived strength of the Facebook community is related to the identification with the university community and the university brand which in turn are related to trust and loyalty. Higher loyalty is linked to citizenship behaviors such as increased contribution to the educational process labeled in-role behaviors and providing positive word of mouth about the university labeled extra-role behaviors. With the challenges of a diverse and global student body which is expected to continue increasing, universities can benefit from use of social media in developing identity, loyalty and trust.
