
Raul Reis
Raul Reis is the Dean of the School of Communication at Emerson College in Boston, where he also holds the rank of professor. Prior to Emerson, he was the Dean of the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Florida International University (FIU) in Miami (2011-2016), and a professor and chair of the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication at California State University, Long Beach (2000-2011). A native of Brazil, Reis worked for many years as a professional journalist. He earned his PhD at the University of Oregon in 1998, as part of the first doctoral class in the School of Journalism and Communication (SOJC). In his PhD dissertation, Reis used ethnography to research how a small village in the Brazilian Amazon forest was affected by the introduction of television. His dissertation won the SOJC’s “Best Dissertation” award in 1998, and was published as a monograph in 2000.Reis’s teaching focuses on digital journalism, media ethics, comparative global media, and multimedia publishing. He has published extensively in academic journals and books on topics such as the impact of mass media on traditional communities
