One of the tombs included in the research programme is Theban Tomb 179, an early Eighteenth Dynasty mortuary monument constructed for Nebamun, censor scribe of grain. Fieldwork has so far focused on the epigraphic documentation of the murals, including the loose fragments originating from the missing wall surfaces. Besides giving an overview of the layout and decoration of the tomb, the study describes one scene, that of the so-called 'Abydos pilgrimage' to illustrate the extent to which the study of loose mural fragments may contribute to a better understanding of a given decorative programme.

The technique of mummification and the way the mummies were embellished and prepared for eternity... more The technique of mummification and the way the mummies were embellished and prepared for eternity were subject to change and development also in the last millennium of ancient Egyptian history. From a purely technical, i.e. anthropological viewpoint, few mummies of this date have been properly examined 1 and thus the historical development of mummification of this period remains to be fully worked out. Collaboration between anthropologists, philologists and archaeologists would be most desirable especially since the Late and Graeco-Roman Periods are rich in textual and archaeological sources concerning embalming. So far, Egyptological research has focused primarily on textual sources, including the accounts given by classical authors such as Herodotus and Diodorus or native text compositions such as the Ritual of Embalming and the Apis Embalming Ritual. Amore balanced picture of mummification emerges from a recent monograph by F. Janot, in which the philological, archaeological and anthropological investigations carry equal weight.2
