Kray Twins of East London

This paper examines the legend of the Kray twins, who were criminals, gangsters, and celebrities ... more This paper examines the legend of the Kray twins, who were criminals, gangsters, and celebrities in the London of the 1950s, and whose popularity has been marked by a growing number of filmic representations, such as the 2015 blockbuster, Legend. I focus on interdisciplinary questions of how role models and their media representation, including photographs, biographies, memoirs by gang members, and film adaptations have created and maintained the image of gangsters, more specifically, of the two East London criminals, Reggie and Ronnie Kray, since the 1950s. I start with an overview of aspects of organised crime and mafias, providing a few examples of famous gangsters who were the role models of the Kray twins, from the American Al Capone and Frank Sinatra to the English gangster Billy Hill. As a case study, I examine the image-making methods and achievements of the Krays in the postwar era until they died in prison (Ronnie in 1995 and Reggie in 2000) and their strange ever-growing fame even 20 years after their death (Campbell, Underworld 8-12). Finally, I demonstrate how the systematically built and promoted Kray brand and legend paved the way for the success of the 2015 film, Legend, which still resonates with the myths surrounding the Krays. Organised crime is usually associated with the provision of illegal goods and services. The idea for the Reel Eye special issue of The AnaChronisT was prompted by a workshop and confere... more The idea for the Reel Eye special issue of The AnaChronisT was prompted by a workshop and conference held at Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE) in September 2021, as part of the ELTE Film and Culture BA Specialisation Programme of the School of English and American Studies (SEAS). The programme was launched in 2015 to improve BA education with the encouragement of the late Prof. Tibor Frank, director of SEAS back then, and of Prof. Ákos Farkas, head of the Department of English Studies (DES) back then. They were both highly dedicated to starting a new Film and Culture programme, which was co-hosted by ELTE SEAS and the Department of Film Studies. With this Reel Eye special issue, we would also like to pay tribute to the work and support of three colleagues: the late Prof. Tibor Frank, Prof. Ákos Farkas, and Prof. Marcell Gellért (now retired), who also participated both in the creation of the Film and Culture 2016 textbook and in the Reel Eye Conferences. By now, we have trained almost 100 students in the Film and Culture programme, who continued their MA studies at different film departments after graduation, finding their feet either in academia or in the film industry. Among our first-generation students, there were young talents who, since then, have proved to be important parts of the Hungarian and international film industries, either as theoreticians, scriptwriters, or filmmakers, of which we are all very proud.

Egy részük-köztük C. Ross Edward IV című monográfiájában (London, 1974) és J. R. Lander Conflict and Stability in 15th century England (London, 1969) című munkájában-úgy véli, hogy az új, centralizált monarchia létrehozása már IV. Edward alatt megkezdődött, míg W. Stubbs The Constitutional History of England (London, 1903) című könyvében kifejtett véleménye szerint ez az első Tudor uralkodó, VII. Henrik személyéhez köthető. Abban azonban egyetértés mutatkozik, hogy VII. Henrik III. London 15. század végi gazdagságáról a velenceiek a következőképpen írtak: "A 185 ezer lakosú város mindenféle luxuscikkben és más termékben egyaránt bővelkedik. A Szent Pál székesegyházhoz vivő egyeden úton több, mint ötven aranyműves bolt sorakozik, melyekben annyi arany-és ezüsttárgy van felhalmozva, mint Milánóban, Rómában, Firenzében és Velencében együttvéve. London eme hatalmas gazdagságát azonban nem nemesek halmozták fel, hanem londoni és flandriai kézművesek és kereskedők. A londoni polgárok tekintélye a velencei nemesekével, polgármesterük hatalma pedig a dózséjével vetekszik". 1 A gazdasági növekedés alapját a város demográfiai növekedése képezte. A velenceiek által 185 ezerre becsült 16. század eleji londoni lélekszámot a kortárs brit kutatók ugyan túlzottnak tartják, de még az óvatosabbak között számontartott Susan Brigden legújabb kutatásai szerint is London lakossága a 14. század végi 30-40 ezerrel szemben a 15. század végére már elérte az 50 ezer főt. Ezt egy további, még dinamikusabb növekedés követte, hiszen ezt a számot Brigden a 16. század közepén már 140 ezerre becsüli. 2 A londoni demográfiai növekedés az országos arányt jóval meghaladta. Henrik (1485-1509) számára London nemcsak mint Anglia legnagyobb-kontincnsi méretekhez viszonyítva egyetlen-nagyvárosa, gazdaságikereskedelmi központja és a Westminstcri királyi palota közelsége miatt volt jelentős, a város politikai szempontból is kulcsfontosságúnak mondható. A Rózsák Háborúja alatt London döntő szerepet játszott a trónkövetelők további sorsában azok szívélyes fogadása, illetve kapui zárva tartása, azaz elutasítása révén. A polgármester mellett a 24 londoni kerület által választott 24 városatya alkotta városvezetés politikai döntéseiben elsősorban az erőviszonyok, illetve a pénzügyi szempontok voltak meghatározók, így amikor 1460-ban York hercege, a későbbi IV. Edward kért Londontól átvonulási engedélyt, a városi tanács az átvonulás engedélyezése mellett voksolt, már csak azért is, mert a városnak nem állt elegendő őrség és fegyver rendelkezésére, hogy egy nagy sereg átvonulását megakadályozza. Ezzel a londoni városvezetés közvetve VI. Henrik bukását szentesítette, 1 a Yorkisták trónra jutásában tehát kulcsszerepet játszott. Állandó sereg híján a seregállítás jelentős kiadással járt volna London számára, hiszen az csakis céhlegényekből alkalmilag toborzott polgárőrséggel volt lehetséges, s azok felszerelése és napidíja mellett munkájuk kiesését is számításba kellett venni. Ugyanakkor a kereskedésből élő városvezetés és a 15. század végétől a textilkereskedelem fellendülésével párhuzamosan mindinkább prosperáló város érdeke a béke fenntartása volt, ezért jó viszony kialakítására törekedtek az erős trónkövetelővel-főként, amikor a beteg és gyengekezű VI. Henrikhez hasonló király ült Anglia trónján-, hogy trónra jutása esetén a város privilégiumai nc csorbuljanak, inkább bővülhessenek. 2 Ezzel is magyarázható, hogy a III. Richárd rövid uralkodása alatt fennálló politikai feszültségek után (IV. Edward gyermekeinek meggyilkolása, Tudor Henrik trónkövetclése), 1485 nyarán London várakozással tekintett a "zsarnok" Richárdot legyőző Henrikre, hiszen London alapvető érdeke volt a polgárháborús viszonyok elhárítása, a rend megteremtése. Egy évvel később, 1486-ban, Arthur herceg születését követően számos londoni kerületben ingyen bort osztottak az embereknek, hogy a trónörökös egészségérc ihassanak, keresztelőjén pedig London nevében a város jegyzője, Sir William Fitzwilliams örömét fejezte ki, hogy a trónöröklés kérdése ilyen hamar eldőlt, s a Tudor dinasztia korai megszilárdulása a polgárháborús veszélyt megszüntette. 3 A trónkövetelők ugyanakkor Londonban a politikai szövetséges mellett pénzügyi forrást, hitelek és adók lehetőségét látták, így az együttműködés kölcsönös érdeken alapult. Ezért a királyok koronázásuk előtti díszes bevonulása Londonba az uralkodó és a város jó viszonyának mintegy zálogaként is felfogható. így Tudor Henrik is a bosworthi győzelem utáni első politikai lépéseként Londonba vonult. Henrik 1485. augusztus 27-i londoni fogadtatása a Tudor dinasztia sorsára nézve meghatározó volt, a város viszonya ugyan változónak mondható a trónjának megszilárdulásával párhuzamosan mind erősebben centralizáló A tanulmány az OTKA támogatásával készült.

I try to prove that there is some stubborn consistency in his oeuvre, in the representation of the disenfranchised and basic social issues (like health, home and family) and their emotional strain on families as well as in the criticism of the Establishment for unemployment, poverty, sickness or addictions from Cathy Come Home (1966) until his last film, Sorry, we missed you (2019). In the past few years Ken Loach seems to have lost the optimism still present in The Angels' Share (2012).

(Baudrillard. 171) British filmmakers are either renowned for working within a particular genre (eg. Merchant Ivory in history, Ken Loach in socialist-realist films), or are considered 'genre-hoppers' like Michael Winterbottom, Danny Boyle and Stephen Frears. British Cinema may have a prestigious tradition of realist drama, but, it has been poor at mythologising the worlds around us, a feat achieved by Hollywood, which created iconic genres (the western and the gangster movies) out of experiences of agricultural labourers and the immigrants of early 20th century'. (Leggott.53, 56) However, I would argue, Britain, in parrallel with her 20th century decline, obsessed with her 'glorious past', the monarchy and the Empire, likewise created a new iconic genre, 'the monarchy film' in the 1930s, something marketable all over the world, and even in the US. The founding father of 'monarchy film', Hungarian-born Alexander Korda, meant to create quality film (to literally outshine low-budget quota films), which is international while based on national (British) history, a genre meant to succeed worldwide and survive in the long run. In the following chapter I intend to prove that the British or rather the English monarchy (because of the recent devolution attempts), as well as the monarchy film did not only succeed and survive, but is still trading well. I am going to give a short survey of the development of British history and its subgenre, the monarchy films with their ever-present problems of marketing, profit and authenticity from 1933, the screening of Korda's first quality history film, The Private Life of Henry VIII until 2006, when The Queen (on Queen Elisabeth II) by Stephen Frears was symbolically 'crowned' by the American Oscar. There are many overlapping terms for describing history or historical films, from period to biopic, from monarchy to costume drama, from quality history to heritage just to name the most widely used ones. James Leggott (77) further distinguishes five (overlapping) categories in British period films: literary adaptations, the biopic, the monarchy film, the war film and the representation of the 20th century. By Kara McKechnie's 2002 definition (217) the history film (although not a blueprint for historical accuracy), is concerned with actual historical figures, while the costume film is set in a recognisable historical period, but with fictional characters. Within the history film category there is a small but disctinctive number of films about monarchs, called the monarchy films. Although these films are often associated with the 1930s, for example, The Private Life of Henry VIII, (A. Korda, 1933), Victoria the Great (Herbert Wilcox, 1937), Tudor Rose (Robert Stevenson, 1936) and Fire Over England (William K. Howard, 1937), the so-called 'monarchy film' after some periodic revival endures to the present day.' One reason for this could be that historical and costume films were predominantly based on the lives of celebrities: royalty, political or religious figures and artists. Moreover, British historical cinema is somewhat 'fixated' with periods of national greatness such as Elizabethan, Jacobean and Victorian eras, reflecting both a British desire to revisit history 'in the wake of new definitions of Britishness and Englishness in a devolved nation, now that England's myths have been degraded by revisionism'. A brit filmtörténet kiemelkedő és nagyra becsült szerzőpárosának, a Michael Powell Emeric Pressbu... more A brit filmtörténet kiemelkedő és nagyra becsült szerzőpárosának, a Michael Powell Emeric Pressburger párosnak, és az Archers brit film produkciós cég alapítóinak az egyik tagja magyar származású, Pressburger Imre néven látott napvilágot Magyarországon, Miskolcon 1902-ben. A brit filmeket közösen jegyző, a történeteket együtt író és rendező szerzőpároson belül Pressburger inkább íróként, forgatókönyvíróként a történetek szellemi atyja. Bár Pressburger Imre főként a forgatókönyveket írta, 1939 és 1972 közt az angol Michael Powell-lel közösen készített 20 filmjükön mégis az szerepel, hogy írta és rendezte Powell és Pressburger. Velich Andrea The representation of the Thames, London bridges and city benches in some postwar L... more Velich Andrea The representation of the Thames, London bridges and city benches in some postwar London-set British new heritage films We might think that there is no more need to talk about the significance of the 215-mile long Thames, the longest river in England, the river that runs along nine English counties, with 134 bridges along it and 44 locks above Teddington. It is true that the Thames is in large part now a domesticated river tamed and controlled by many generations. However, the Thames is also a tidal river below Teddington (Ackroyd 4). Moreover, the high tide has risen greatly over the past 2000 years as southeast England is slowly (305 meters by the century) sinking into the water. When this is combined with the water issuing from the dissolution of the polar ice-caps, the tides moving up the lower reaches of the Thames are increasing at a rate of 2 feet (0.6 m) per century. That is why the recently erected Thames Barrier will sadly not provide enough protection and another barrier has already been proposed (Wright 1999: 11) The strong artistic (and filmic) representation of the river Thames might, however, also indirectly prove its importance. Metaphorically (and this is important and thus frequently used in films and visual representation), the Thames is a river of dreams, but it is also a river of death and suicide. It has been called 'liquid history' because "within it dissolves and carries all epochs and generations. They ebb and flow like water" (Croad 68). In The Principles of Psychology (1890) William James first coined the phrase 'stream of consciousness' in which every definite image of the mind is steeped in the free water that flows around it. Thus 'it flows' like the river itself. Yet the river is also a token of the unconscious, with its suggestion of depth and invisible life (britannica.com/art/stream-of-consciousness). Baptism (and so religion and afterlife) was once also instinctively associated with the river. The Thames has been an emblem of redemption and of renewal, of the hope of escaping from time itself. Sir Walter Raleigh wrote in his History of the World (1610) from his prison cell that the Thames is a model of human destiny, a mirror of mortality (Ackroyd 8). According to Schneer, the Thames has gradually become the image of the nation, "mollifying land and water in one capacious embrace, affording coherence and unity to disparate regions. It permits the growth and spread of a common culture. It creates harmony out of apparent discord, and in that capacity alone it has done more to establish the idea of Englishness than any other national feature" (45). The Thames has been a highway, a frontier and an attack route, it has been a playground and a sewer, a source of water and a source of power. "It has been what the Romans called a 'public'

With this Reel Eye special issue, we would also like to pay tribute to the work and support of three colleagues: the late Prof. Tibor Frank, Prof. Ákos Farkas, and Prof. Marcell Gellért (now retired), who also participated both in the creation of the Film and Culture 2016 textbook and in the Reel Eye Conferences. By now, we have trained almost 100 students in the Film and Culture programme, who continued their MA studies at different film departments after graduation, finding their feet either in academia or in the film industry. Among our first-generation students, there were young talents who, since then, have proved to be important parts of the Hungarian and international film industries, either as theoreticians, scriptwriters, or filmmakers, of which we are all very proud.

Lander Conflict and Stability in 15th century England (London, 1969) című munkájában-úgy véli, hogy az új, centralizált monarchia létrehozása már IV. Edward alatt megkezdődött, míg W. Stubbs The Constitutional History of England (London, 1903) című könyvében kifejtett véleménye szerint ez az első Tudor uralkodó, VII. Henrik személyéhez köthető. Abban azonban egyetértés mutatkozik, hogy VII. Henrik III. Richárd fölött aratott bosworthi győzelme, amely a Rózsák Háborújának a lezárásához vezetett, a centralizált monarchia megteremtésének alapfeltétele volt. így ma a legtöbb, brit történelmet tárgyaló monográfia-köztük az Oxford History of Britain (Oxford, 1952) korai Tudor kötetének szerzője, J. Hasonlóképpen egyetértenek abban a korabeli Londonnal foglalkozó kutatók, hogy a bosworthi csatát követő béke és konszolidáció jelentős mértékben hozzájárult London szerepének megnövekedéséhez. Az alábbiakban azt a folyamatot szeretnénk felvázolni, amelynek során a 15. század végi Angliában VII. Henrik, az első Tudor uralkodó erős centralizációs törekvései, illetve a gazdagodó és egyre nagyobb befolyásra szert tevő londoni társadalom és városvezetés közötti érdekellentétek felszínre kerültek, majd gazdasági és politikai küzdelemmé erősödtek. Ez a London és a király közötti harc több szinten, területen és formában zajlott, benne a parlamenti és parlamenten kívüli lobbyk is jelentős szerepet játszottak. London 15. század végi gazdagságáról a velenceiek a következőképpen írtak: "A 185 ezer lakosú város mindenféle luxuscikkben és más termékben egyaránt bővelkedik. A Szent Pál székesegyházhoz vivő egyeden úton több, mint ötven aranyműves bolt sorakozik, melyekben annyi arany-és ezüsttárgy van felhalmozva, mint Milánóban, Rómában, Firenzében és Velencében együttvéve. London eme hatalmas gazdagságát azonban nem nemesek halmozták fel, hanem londoni és flandriai kézművesek és kereskedők. A londoni polgárok tekintélye a velencei nemesekével, polgármesterük hatalma pedig a dózséjével vetekszik". 1 A gazdasági növekedés alapját a város demográfiai növekedése képezte. A velenceiek által 185 ezerre becsült 16. század eleji londoni lélekszámot a kortárs brit kutatók ugyan túlzottnak tartják, de még az óvatosabbak között számontartott Susan Brigden legújabb kutatásai szerint is London lakossága a 14. század végi 30-40 ezerrel szemben a 15. század végére már elérte az 50 ezer főt. Ezt egy további, még dinamikusabb növekedés követte, hiszen ezt a számot Brigden a 16. század közepén már 140 ezerre becsüli. 2 A londoni demográfiai növekedés az országos arányt jóval meghaladta. Henrik (1485-1509) számára London nemcsak mint Anglia legnagyobb-kontincnsi méretekhez viszonyítva egyetlen-nagyvárosa, gazdaságikereskedelmi központja és a Westminstcri királyi palota közelsége miatt volt jelentős, a város politikai szempontból is kulcsfontosságúnak mondható. A Rózsák Háborúja alatt London döntő szerepet játszott a trónkövetelők további sorsában azok szívélyes fogadása, illetve kapui zárva tartása, azaz elutasítása révén. A polgármester mellett a 24 londoni kerület által választott 24 városatya alkotta városvezetés politikai döntéseiben elsősorban az erőviszonyok, illetve a pénzügyi szempontok voltak meghatározók, így amikor 1460-ban York hercege, a későbbi IV. Edward kért Londontól átvonulási engedélyt, a városi tanács az átvonulás engedélyezése mellett voksolt, már csak azért is, mert a városnak nem állt elegendő őrség és fegyver rendelkezésére, hogy egy nagy sereg átvonulását megakadályozza. Ezzel a londoni városvezetés közvetve VI. Henrik bukását szentesítette, 1 a Yorkisták trónra jutásában tehát kulcsszerepet játszott. Állandó sereg híján a seregállítás jelentős kiadással járt volna London számára, hiszen az csakis céhlegényekből alkalmilag toborzott polgárőrséggel volt lehetséges, s azok felszerelése és napidíja mellett munkájuk kiesését is számításba kellett venni. Ugyanakkor a kereskedésből élő városvezetés és a 15. század végétől a textilkereskedelem fellendülésével párhuzamosan mindinkább prosperáló város érdeke a béke fenntartása volt, ezért jó viszony kialakítására törekedtek az erős trónkövetelővel-főként, amikor a beteg és gyengekezű VI. Henrikhez hasonló király ült Anglia trónján-, hogy trónra jutása esetén a város privilégiumai nc csorbuljanak, inkább bővülhessenek. 2 Ezzel is magyarázható, hogy a III. Richárd rövid uralkodása alatt fennálló politikai feszültségek után (IV. Edward gyermekeinek meggyilkolása, Tudor Henrik trónkövetclése), 1485 nyarán London várakozással tekintett a "zsarnok" Richárdot legyőző Henrikre, hiszen London alapvető érdeke volt a polgárháborús viszonyok elhárítása, a rend megteremtése. Egy évvel később, 1486-ban, Arthur herceg születését követően számos londoni kerületben ingyen bort osztottak az embereknek, hogy a trónörökös egészségérc ihassanak, keresztelőjén pedig London nevében a város jegyzője, Sir William Fitzwilliams örömét fejezte ki, hogy a trónöröklés kérdése ilyen hamar eldőlt, s a Tudor dinasztia korai megszilárdulása a polgárháborús veszélyt megszüntette. 3 A trónkövetelők ugyanakkor Londonban a politikai szövetséges mellett pénzügyi forrást, hitelek és adók lehetőségét látták, így az együttműködés kölcsönös érdeken alapult. Ezért a királyok koronázásuk előtti díszes bevonulása Londonba az uralkodó és a város jó viszonyának mintegy zálogaként is felfogható. így Tudor Henrik is a bosworthi győzelem utáni első politikai lépéseként Londonba vonult. In the past few years Ken Loach seems to have lost the optimism still present in The Angels' Share (2012).

(Baudrillard. 171) British filmmakers are either renowned for working within a particular genre (eg. Merchant Ivory in history, Ken Loach in socialist-realist films), or are considered 'genre-hoppers' like Michael Winterbottom, Danny Boyle and Stephen Frears. British Cinema may have a prestigious tradition of realist drama, but, it has been poor at mythologising the worlds around us, a feat achieved by Hollywood, which created iconic genres (the western and the gangster movies) out of experiences of agricultural labourers and the immigrants of early 20th century'. (Leggott.53, 56) However, I would argue, Britain, in parrallel with her 20th century decline, obsessed with her 'glorious past', the monarchy and the Empire, likewise created a new iconic genre, 'the monarchy film' in the 1930s, something marketable all over the world, and even in the US. The founding father of 'monarchy film', Hungarian-born Alexander Korda, meant to create quality film (to literally outshine low-budget quota films), which is international while based on national (British) history, a genre meant to succeed worldwide and survive in the long run. In the following chapter I intend to prove that the British or rather the English monarchy (because of the recent devolution attempts), as well as the monarchy film did not only succeed and survive, but is still trading well. I am going to give a short survey of the development of British history and its subgenre, the monarchy films with their ever-present problems of marketing, profit and authenticity from 1933, the screening of Korda's first quality history film, The Private Life of Henry VIII until 2006, when The Queen (on Queen Elisabeth II) by Stephen Frears was symbolically 'crowned' by the American Oscar. There are many overlapping terms for describing history or historical films, from period to biopic, from monarchy to costume drama, from quality history to heritage just to name the most widely used ones. James Leggott (77) further distinguishes five (overlapping) categories in British period films: literary adaptations, the biopic, the monarchy film, the war film and the representation of the 20th century. By Kara McKechnie's 2002 definition (217) the history film (although not a blueprint for historical accuracy), is concerned with actual historical figures, while the costume film is set in a recognisable historical period, but with fictional characters. Within the history film category there is a small but disctinctive number of films about monarchs, called the monarchy films. Although these films are often associated with the 1930s, for example, The Private Life of Henry VIII, (A. Korda, 1933), Victoria the Great (Herbert Wilcox, 1937), Tudor Rose (Robert Stevenson, 1936) and Fire Over England (William K. Howard, 1937), the so-called 'monarchy film' after some periodic revival endures to the present day.' One reason for this could be that historical and costume films were predominantly based on the lives of celebrities: royalty, political or religious figures and artists. Moreover, British historical cinema is somewhat 'fixated' with periods of national greatness such as Elizabethan, Jacobean and Victorian eras, reflecting both a British desire to revisit history 'in the wake of new definitions of Britishness and Englishness in a devolved nation, now that England's myths have been degraded by revisionism'. A brit filmeket közösen jegyző, a történeteket együtt író és rendező szerzőpároson belül Pressburger inkább íróként, forgatókönyvíróként a történetek szellemi atyja. Bár Pressburger Imre főként a forgatókönyveket írta, 1939 és 1972 közt az angol Michael Powell-lel közösen készített 20 filmjükön mégis az szerepel, hogy írta és rendezte Powell és Pressburger. Velich Andrea The representation of the Thames, London bridges and city benches in some postwar L... more Velich Andrea The representation of the Thames, London bridges and city benches in some postwar London-set British new heritage films We might think that there is no more need to talk about the significance of the 215-mile long Thames, the longest river in England, the river that runs along nine English counties, with 134 bridges along it and 44 locks above Teddington. It is true that the Thames is in large part now a domesticated river tamed and controlled by many generations. However, the Thames is also a tidal river below Teddington (Ackroyd 4). Moreover, the high tide has risen greatly over the past 2000 years as southeast England is slowly (305 meters by the century) sinking into the water. When this is combined with the water issuing from the dissolution of the polar ice-caps, the tides moving up the lower reaches of the Thames are increasing at a rate of 2 feet (0.6 m) per century. That is why the recently erected Thames Barrier will sadly not provide enough protection and another barrier has already been proposed (Wright 1999: 11) The strong artistic (and filmic) representation of the river Thames might, however, also indirectly prove its importance. Metaphorically (and this is important and thus frequently used in films and visual representation), the Thames is a river of dreams, but it is also a river of death and suicide. It has been called 'liquid history' because "within it dissolves and carries all epochs and generations. They ebb and flow like water" (Croad 68). In The Principles of Psychology (1890) William James first coined the phrase 'stream of consciousness' in which every definite image of the mind is steeped in the free water that flows around it. Thus 'it flows' like the river itself. Yet the river is also a token of the unconscious, with its suggestion of depth and invisible life (britannica.com/art/stream-of-consciousness). Baptism (and so religion and afterlife) was once also instinctively associated with the river. The Thames has been an emblem of redemption and of renewal, of the hope of escaping from time itself. Sir Walter Raleigh wrote in his History of the World (1610) from his prison cell that the Thames is a model of human destiny, a mirror of mortality (Ackroyd 8). According to Schneer, the Thames has gradually become the image of the nation, "mollifying land and water in one capacious embrace, affording coherence and unity to disparate regions. It permits the growth and spread of a common culture. It creates harmony out of apparent discord, and in that capacity alone it has done more to establish the idea of Englishness than any other national feature" (45). The Thames has been a highway, a frontier and an attack route, it has been a playground and a sewer, a source of water and a source of power. "It has been what the Romans called a 'public'
