List O' Fic

Hey, look, I went INSANE and actually made a list of all the fic I've posted. *facepalm* This is staying right at the top of my journal for the REST OF MY LIFE so that I can keep it updated. Hopefully it will prove useful.
I am including commentfic, and drabbles I posted in a glot, as their own separate entries. BECAUSE IT'S MY LIST. B}

Just now realised I forgot to repost this here after the author reveals last year!

Title: Starts With "Imm-"
Author: feathermint
Real Author Name: eliyes
Written for: argentum_ls
Crossover with: Teen Wolf (the live action TV show that began airing in 2011)
Characters/Pairings: Lydia Martin, Ceirdwyn, Alex Raven, Jackson Whittemore (mentions of others from both canons). Lydia Martin/Jackson Whittemore (het).
Rating: PG for discussion of canon-typical violence.
Author's Notes: You've written Lydia multiple times, so I figured it would be okay use her as the POV character. This was literally the first thing I thought of when they said Lydia was Immune.
Summary: Lydia Martin goes for a scholarship interview with representatives of the Rebecca Horne Foundation and has some surprising information about her future opportunities explained to her.

That's impossible.Collapse )

Lucius vs Arthur

Just another of the many, many puns and references in Harry Potter:

"Lucius fights to reclaim Gaul from his treacherous tribune Frollo at the time of King Arthur's rise to power. After Arthur conquers Gaul, word of his great deeds reaches Rome, and Lucius demands that Arthur pay him tribute and recognize him as his sovereign. When Arthur refuses, Lucius invades the land of Arthur's allies on the continent, and Arthur and his knights hurry across the English Channel to do battle with him. Arthur defeats Lucius and adds Italy to his lands."

Title: Black Doings in Azkaban
Fandom: Harry Potter
Summary: Locked away in Azkaban prison, Sirius takes the advantage of the arrival of his cousin Bellatrix to help his godson.
Author's Note: This is an AU jumping-off point. I don't know that I'll ever continue with this story, and I don't know that I won't.

A conversation between inmates with far-reaching consequences.Collapse )

This is not a surprise.

Well, it's surprising that the embedding of the quiz results went snafu, but the actual results were less so.

I took The Greek Godly Parent Quiz, aimed at Percy Jackson fans, and I got Hermes!

Which is my unsurprise.

There was a cool picture of Hermes here but see above about embedding issue.

Amayadori / taking shelter from the rain

This is a bittersweet duet from Koko wa Greenwood. "Amayadori" does literally mean "take shelter from the rain" but also connotes how people from very different backgrounds can, for a time, share a space together because of it, and then part. I love this song because not only is it a perfect image song for the deeper level of the relationship between the two characters (whose voice actors are) mainly singing it, but it is also the essential underlying theme for the entire series. The school, and more specifically the dorm, Greenwood, is the great tree under which most of the students find themselves meeting and sharing a space, before parting again to go out into the world, and possibly never meet again.

I'm kind of disappointed that I can't find any crossovers for Night Hood and Harry Potter. I mean, they even got an actor with a very similar hair colour to Arsène's to play Remus in the movies, surely the visuals work. Imagine if Arsène Lupin, gentleman burglar, was a wizard and that's how he could do all that he did. Or better, he wasn't a wizard, but since his skills of thievery and disguise were just so elite, someone from the wizarding world was made to investigate if it was a wizard using their magic to mess with the muggles, and fell in love. He'd be the right age to be Remus' grandfather*, it could totally work. He doesn't even have to be Remus' actual grandfather; having awesome burglary inclined relations on the continent could only be useful to a member of the Order, during the first War against Voldemort, right? Cousins!

The closest I've found, and this is really stretching, is the Lupin family being originally from France and moving to England because Beauxbatons wouldn't accept a werewolf student and Dumbledore did.

* I judge this thusly: I am two years younger than Harry Potter. By all accounts, Lily and the Marauders seem to have been within 5 years of how old my mom was when she had me. Her mother was born during WWII. Night Hood seems to take place in the 20s, and Arsène doesn't have a kid during the show, so a child soonish after the show would be the right age to be Remus Lupin's dad's generation.

*peeks out of bunker*

Is it safe to come back to the internet? Is all the April 1st stuff over yet?

for your information

We (tai and I) have a character who killed Madonna to spite his estranged father, who is a fan of her music.

We did this before Lady Gaga was a thing, and now are reconsidering.

(No, this is not a nice character. Yes, this is an alternate reality.)

I grieve with thee.

Farewell, Leonard. We'll miss you.

It looks like claymation. Even some of the energy effects. (This is not a complaint.)

And an excerpt from a logfile of chatting with kiffie yesterday:

kiffie: Also, Namor - Asshole = never meeting Betty or Jim.
eliyes: Betty would have carried on, her life a bit less rich and weird, but Jim
eliyes: Jim needs Namor
eliyes: as a rival and compatriot and friend
kiffie: Yes.
eliyes: as someone else who doesn't entirely understand the people around him in a way that merely being from another country doesn't cover
kiffie: Yep.
eliyes: and as someone to demonstrate things like the passion Namor has
kiffie: And, for his part, Namor functions pretty well without Jim, but he's happy when he's around that doofy firebot.
kiffie: Steve has lots of passion, but it's fairly one-direction and typically not to the visible extremes that Namor gets to. :V
kiffie: Namor will crush a steel door in his bare hands just because he's excited about bagels. :V

Then we got distracted by Namorita and cupcakes, but -- my point is, sometimes it's like life is an ongoing dialogue with the universe about the relationships between comic book characters.

Gingerbread BNB

The Robin Hood Foundation, a charity aimed at alleviating poverty (and funding disaster relief) in the New York City area -- you can read what wikipedia has to say about them here and what they say about themselves here -- has come up with a really cute idea for raising money to put roofs over the heads of homeless families this holiday season.

Check out Gingerbread BNB.

You book a virtual stay in one of three gingerbread houses, and 100% of the money goes to sheltering homeless families. Every $100 (USD, I presume) gives one family a home for the night, but the options are tailored to how much you can afford to give. The Cozy Camper is $5 a night, the Rustic Cabin is $10 a night, and the Modern Home is $20 a night, and you choose how many nights your stay will be. The descriptions are cute and funny, and if you donate (which you can also do as a gift for someone), you get a postcard of your virtual stay and the warm fuzzy feeling of helping contribute to help people in need.

This is a great hook for a charity fund drive, and I hope more such charities follow Robin Hood's path of this kind of appealing innovation.

Hey, people, the Highlander Holiday Shortcuts signups are open! It's a secret santa exchange with a 500 word minimum (and no max). I did it last year for the first time and it was a lot of fun. If you'd be interested, give it a looksee -- signups end October 9th!

In other news, there was a group of Girl Guides selling cookies on the walk between the pet food store and the drug store and I got a box of "chocolatey mint cookies". They are neither as chocolatey nor as minty as I remember, and now they have this thin layer of, like, possibly somewhat minty oreo-like filling between the cookie and the coating? When did that start?

My faaaaaaave season, part 2

So, I mentioned I bought some things to cook to celebrate the first day of Autumn. And cook them I did! :Dd

I tried two recipes from Budget Bytes, making Spice Rubbed Roasted Squash (using a buttercup squash) and Oven Roasted Autumn Medley (using everything else).

Everything turned out well, though I made some substitutions. The most obvious being that instead of turkey sausage I used pork roast, and I used a different kind of onion because I'm not really a red onion fan. That and some minor stuff with spices -- I had no basil so I subbed in a half-measure of Italian seasoning, I had no paprika so I put in some ancho -- and I discovered my bakeware was not up to the sizes I was using so I kitbashed some containers made of aluminum foil on pizza pans. (I had forgotten I threw some things out that were older than my eligibility to vote, and also rusty.) Also, my oven wasn't big enough to hold everything at once so I cooked the squash first, then the medley.

Soooo many leftovers. I cooked the whole squash, even though I knew there was no way I was eating more than a quarter of it that day, because if you're gonna put a tonne of squash back in the fridge it might as well be cooked so you can just eat it whenever. If I had put back, say, half the squash raw, I would have just had to throw it out eventually. This way, I have noms! Yesterday I just ate like a quarter of it cold with a spoon (it has about the same texture as a hard-boiled egg yoke... but is a mellower yellow), and today I pureed some to add to a cream of potato soup, which was DELICIOUS with buttered toast and a glass of cold apple cider. I think next time I will halve the spice mixture and cook part of the squash with just some olive oil drizzled on. I love the spicy sweetness, but it will be easier to add leftovers to more things if it's a bit more neutral. (Can you freeze cooked squash? eta: YEP.)

Speaking of apples, I'm going to have to do some research on different apples to use for next time, because the mackintoshes I did use basically melted. That was awesome fresh from the oven -- like a very tart applesauce! -- but didn't do so great in leftovers. I want something firmer.

My faaaaaaave season

I've got squash, sweet potatoes, apples, onion, and little pork roasts.

The first day of Autumn will be celebrated.
Was Stiles' frontotemporal dementia something that the nogitsune somehow faked (I can think of 4 or 5 reasons why it would), something it for real caused in him, or something he actually had regardless, AND, does the replica of his body Stiles now inhabits have it or the possibility of it?
Holy crap, they've made Into the Woods into a movie.

And it's a Disney movie, so they might keep the songs!

on different tastes

A little while ago -- a week, maybe? -- I discovered the tumblr of a fanfic writer I like. Now, I like every fic they wrote that I have ever read, and I went to the tumblr because they have an ongoing story I'm really into and they said they'd be giving updates on how it's coming along there. (Because apparently just getting a notification when the newest chapter is up wasn't enough for me, I dunno.)

This writer, they produce works with excellent structure, great thoughtfulness and depth of characterization, interesting plots, and enjoyable use of language. Really, I like their stuff a lot!

So I was initially excited when I discovered that they post fic recs! Surely, if their writing was to my taste, what they like must be stuff I'll find worth looking at, right?

Turns out no. The stuff they like is either stuff I find too boring or poorly done to really get into, or stuff I actually hate. They made one rec saying, "I don't know why this isn't on every rec list for this fandom" and I actually said out loud, "because it's really bad" (having previously tried to read the story in question).

It's weird, isn't it? You would think someone whose writing we like would like the same sort of stuff we like to read, but it isn't always the case. There have been times when I've read an interview with a published author or a scriptwriter or a poet whose work I enjoy and they've said someone or something was a big inspiration to them, and I've thought, "Wow, I really hated that book/show/etc."

I guess it just proves that even if you're inspired by someone else, even if you think artistic works are inevitably at least somewhat derivative of the the artist's influences, the artist themself -- and what they put into it -- really makes a difference to the audience.

and it wasn't pants

Hey, fanfic land

Excuse me, I would like an NCIS/H50 crossover where Tony is related to Rachel on his mother's side. I would like an NCIS fic where the reason Ducky's mother is convinced he's a gigolo is that she's mistaking him for his father. I would like "undercover as a couple" stories about friends who think the whole thing is hilarious and don't end up hooking up. I would like a couple who are in law enforcement of some kind getting mistaken for undercover by the bad guys they weren't expecting to be there. I would like a metric fuckton of McKay/Weir fic, please, and triple that in stories about their friendship. I would like Ezra-centric stories that take into account that he never once canonically called Josiah "Mr. Sanchez". I would like in-character TOS Jim Kirk instead of fanon, pop culture Jim Kirk. I would like clever, interesting casefic with emotional investment, and slice-of-life friendship/family fic, and comedy that isn't based on lying, and plots that don't necessarily revolve around violence, and relationships with equality instead of power imbalance, and banter, and imagination, and hope.

Things I was writing

Recently I've been doing spring cleaning, furniture re-arranging, and junk culling. This has lead to me finding a lot of my notebooks, and I've found fics I've already posted here, and fics I never finished, original sci-fi settings, doodles, D&D character sheets and campaign notes, journal entries of the not-to-be-shared variety, outlines for various stories and AUs...

The two things that stand out to me are,

A) I have an actual in-progress novella set in the Stargate SG-1 s10e13 "The Road Not Taken" universe, post-episode. And it's actually pretty good! I wish I could remember where I was going with it, exactly, so I could pick it back up, but even the outline I found only went so far. (Also, I have a note and it's relevant in what's written that McKay has asthma instead of hypoglycemia, and I wonder why. Is that in the show...? I'll have to rewatch the episode...)

and

B) Several pages of a Young Hercules fanfic. I, uh... what?

Okay, so I've not made it a secret I was into the whole Hercules: The Legendary Journeys/Xena: Warrior Princess/Young Hercules series setting thing. I'm pretty sure I posted links to my fave Widow Twanky fanvid, and that filk about Callisto. I used to use an icon of Iolaus from Young Hercules on this very journal! But I don't think I've written any fanfic in that universe other than... this.

It's Our Heroic Foursome running into Anticlea, who's about their age in the story, and... *scratches head* Mythologically speaking, she's the daughter of Autolycus and the mother of Odysseus, both of whom are Herc's contemporaries in the show 'verse. (Granted, so is Iolaus. He's supposed to be his nephew, princely son of King Iphicles.) I wish I knew where I was going with this story, too! But less because I want to finish it and more because I'm confused. XD

"Noooooooo! Come back, Pikachu!"

when there's an email in my inbox that starts with the words "Pokemon dubstep", you know I gotta

Okay, so the Rawlemon solar collector is an awesome idea and more efficient than photovoltaic panels and will work on parts of the globe where PV panels are just not getting enough sunlight for them to be worth their expense. And they collect solar energy from the moon. That's very cool, and the ickle beta.ey gizmos that can charge a phone look pretty neat.

But I see no reason why we can't have those and Solar Roadways.

Check out this awesome shit:

Talkin' 'bout Asvel.

taichara: "And finally, Asvel's hit 11, and doesn't have any enemies in dire need of killing. It's time. Time for pants."
eliyes: XD
eliyes: reporter: Asvel, why is it you are now breaking your embargo on pants or leggings?
Asvel: Well, it's been pretty violent around here, you know, and I've been doing my part. I actually started off with pants, but it's really hard to get blood and guts -- and gravedirt stuck to that, when we had time to stop and bury a fallen comrade -- out of most fabrics. Much easier to go barelegged and wash it off my skin. Things are settling down a bit now, though, so *deep breath* I think it's time.
reporter: I see. Well, good luck to you!

Guess what I'm thinking of rewatching?

I must not fear.
Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the fear has gone there will be nothing.
Only I will remain.

I miss videos like this~

"be positive about writing" meme

claravoyant posted the following exercise (and then deleted or moved their blog, so I can't link the original post):

1. of the fic you’ve written, which are you most proud of?
2. favorite tense (past/present/future)
3. favorite POV (first/second/third/etc)
4. what are some themes you love writing about?
5. what inspires you to write?
6. thoughts on critique
7. create a character on the spot…. NOW!
8. is there a character you love writing for the most? the least? why?
9. a passage from a WIP
10. what are your strengths wrt writing?
11. what are your weaknesses wrt writing?
12. what’s your favorite place for writing resources?
13. who are your favorite writers?

I think the original gist was that people were supposed to give the poster a number and they'd answer (it was on tumblr, that seems to be a thing), but I am not going to do that. I'm just going to repost these here because I think all my writerly friends might get some benefit from thinking about what their answers are to some of these. I may post some answers in a future edit.
