Child Services
Ages 6 to 12
This chapter in your child’s life is often referred to as “middle childhood”. Children are now in school, joining extracurricular activities, forming friendships, and learning to be independent! As parents, you are doing your best to help them develop the positive skills they need to successfully learn, interact, behave, manage their emotions, and grow. Parents and caregivers want to see their children flourish and be ready for the next stage of adolescence; this includes having a relationship with their child that will withstand the ups and downs of adolescence.
We are here to support parents and caregivers on their journey! Parenting support can be provided as a stand-alone service or as part of your child’s individual therapy.
Studies show that children as young as 5, with certain presentations, may benefit from individual therapy when it is delivered in a developmentally appropriate method. However, every child is different. As a general rule, the older a child is, the more likely they may benefit from individual therapy. Children who struggle with managing their emotions, have stress in their life they have trouble coping with, have experienced trauma, or are presenting with symptoms of a mental health issue may benefit from individual therapy.
We can provide these individual services to your child while keeping parents involved in the process. An initial appointment with parents or primary caregivers are where services start. From there, the psychologist/counsellor will meet your child and you will be invited to attend part of the session. Caregivers can help their child utilize coping strategies between sessions to gain the most from coming to appointments.
As children enter school, parents, caregivers, and teachers may notice they are struggling to learn, stay focused, interact with their peers or manage their emotions and behaviour. When it’s hard to know how best to help, or when many things have been tried without success, an assessment can provide the information needed to help a child become the best version of themselves.
Do you need help figuring out if your child would benefit from assessment? You are not alone, so we added this to our FAQ! It also helps to know that services start with an initial appointment with parents or primary caregivers. From there, your psychologist can help you decide if and what further assessment would be most beneficial based on your child’s unique needs.
