Unknown. Perhaps formed in English from a similar term; compare whosit, whaddayacallit. Perhaps coined as an exotic-sounding nonsense word. Perhaps from Persian or Urdu حجت (hujjat, “argument”), from Arabic حجة (ḥujja, “argument; pretext”). Attested from the early 20th century.
