From Proto-Italic *meɣei with enclitic reduction of /e/ (cf. tuus), from Proto-Indo-European *h₁mégʰ(e)y (contrast with tibi, with the suffix *-bʰi as in the instrumental). Cognate to Umbrian mehe.
