From 中期英語 jaberen, javeren, chaveren (“to chatter, babble”), dissimilated forms of jablen, chavelen (“to jabber”), from 中期英語 chavel ("jaw"; > modern English jowl). Equivalent to jowl +‎ -er (iterative suffix).
