1. (zoology, rare) Of certain diplurans, having an abnormally high number of thoracic spiracles (openings for respiration).
   • 1936, Philippine Journal of Science‎, page 196:

     In the most primitive condition twelve spiracles are present, being located on each of the thoracic and the anterior nine abdominal segments. This condition, however, is only known in the embryonic state of Leptinotarsa, In the postembryonic stages eleven pairs of spiracles, at most, are exceptionally present in the hyperpneustic insects, such as Japyx spp., which are provided with the prothoracic spiracles.
