The verb is from 中期英語 *gomen, from the noun. Compare native 中期英語 yemen, from 古期英語 ġīeman (“to care for, heed”), and Gothic 𐌲𐌰𐌿𐌼𐌾𐌰𐌽 (gaumjan, “observe”).
