1単位として取扱える文字,語,レコードの集まり.主記憶装置と入出力装置との間のデータの転送はこのブロックの単位で行われる.磁気テープにデータを記録するときレコードをいくつかまとめてブロックにしておくと処理の効率がよくなる.
データ通信の分野では,伝送メッセージの始めと終わりに少なくとも1個の伝送制御文字を含む一群の文字列のことをブロックと呼ぶことがある.
プログラム言語のALGOLの場合,宣言の列に文が続いたものをbeginとendでくくったものをブロックと呼んでいる.COBOLの場合,複数のレコードを組み合わせたデータの物理的単位をブロックと呼んでいる.
何らかの目的から一単位とみなされる文字,語又はレコードの列
