Borrowed from Middle French apparence, from Latin apparentia, from appareo. Morphologically appear +‎ -ance. Doublet of apparence and apparency. Displaced native 古期英語 hīew (“the way something looks or seems”) and ætīewednes (“act of appearing or coming into view”).
