James Joseph "Whitey" Bulger, Jr. (born September 3, 1929) is a reputed former mob boss who led the Winter Hill Gang, based in Massachusetts. Although allegedly involved with major criminal activities and murders, local lore depicted Bulger as a Robin Hood type figure dedicated to protecting the people. Beginning in 1975, Bulger served as a top echelon informant for the Federal Bureau of Investigation. As a result, the Bureau largely ignored his criminal activities in exchange for information about the inner workings of the Italian American Patriarca crime family. Beginning in 1997, the local media exposed criminal actions by federal, state, and local law enforcement tied to Bulger. For the FBI especially, this has caused great embarrassment.
