Ultimately from Byzantine Greek Βάραγγος (Bárangos), from Medieval Latin Varingus, from Old Norse væringi, from várr (“pledge”) or værr (“pledge”), which is cognate with 古期英語 wǣr (“fidelity, loyalty”), + Old Norse gangi (“companion”). Cognate with 古期英語 wærgenga.
