不安障害の一種で、身体的な外傷や、もしくは戦闘、暴行、自然災害、その他の生命を脅かす出来事などの重度の精神的・情動的苦痛への反応として発症するもの。がんへの罹患もまた、心的外傷後ストレス障害につながる場合がある。症状は日常生活の妨げとなるもので、具体的には、悪夢やフラッシュバックでその出来事を再体験する;その出来事に関係のある人、場所、物を避ける;孤独を感じ、日々の活動への関心を失う;集中力の欠如や睡眠障害、などがみられる。「ptsd」とも呼ばれる。
