アメリカのイリノイ大学が1950年代に開発した,コンピュータで学習を支援するためのシステム.PLATOは大型コンピュータを使った教育システムとして1960年にその最初のシステム(PLATO i)が完成した.その後,改良されパーソナルコンピュータで稼動するシステムや,パーソナルコンピュータとミニコンピュータを組み合わせた分散型システムなども開発されてきた.
