Housel was, until the Protestant Reformation, the common English term for the Christian Eucharist. The word is cognate to Icelandic húsl, which was used in the same sense. It is thought to be derived from Proto-Germanic (PGmc) *hunslan "sacrifice", also attested in Gothic hunsl, and may be connected to the PGmc verb *henþanan "to take captive, capture" and the nominal derivative *hunþiz "captive". Thus, housel likely denoted a sacrificial victim, and was later transferred to the Eucharist, particularly the sacramental bread, as the central Christian sacrifice. As John Lingard notes in his History and Antiquities of the Anglo-Saxon Church:
