From Spanish Española (“Little Spain”), from España (“Spain”) + -ola (“-ule: forming diminutives”). In reference to the Ecuadorian island, bestowed in 1892 in honor of the quadricentennial of Christopher Columbus's first voyage, during which he reached Hispaniola. Doublet of Hispaniola.
