An information source that contains data about users, computer files, or other objects. In a file system, a directory stores information about files. In a distributed computing environment (such as a Windows domain), the directory stores information about objects such as printers, fax servers, applications, databases, and users.

1)識別子およびそれに対応するデータの項目の参照から成る表のこと.
2)補助記憶装置上などのどこにどのようなデータが入っているかを示す「表」のこと.通常はファイルであり,データの種類,作成月日,格納位置などが登録されている.実際にデータを検索するには,このディレクトリを参照して行われる.一般に,ディレクトリの構造は非常に複雑であるが,ハードウェア機器構成の知識なしに,ディレクトリを介してデータを利用できるようになっている.

From 中期英語 directorie, dyrectorye, from Medieval Latin dīrectōrium. Doublet of directorium. The political sense is a semantic loan from French directoire.

- A list of names, addresses etc, of specific classes of people or organizations, often in alphabetical order or in some classification.
