Uncertain; perhaps from bēo (“bee”) +‎ wulf (“wolf”), used as a kenning for “bear” or “woodpecker”. Compare also the alternative form Beadowulf, from beadu (“battle”) +‎ wulf, which may be the original. Probably cognate with Old Norse Bjólfr (from earlier *Bíolfr, *Béolfr).
