使用する際の注意点

In Modern English, the letter b is sometimes silent, as when final after m, in climb, comb, lamb, limb, tomb, thumb, etc. and in a few other cases, such as debt, doubt and subtle. For some words ending in mb (e.g. limb, numb, thumb), the b was never pronounced and is a modern graphic insertion on the analogy of words like climb, comb and lamb where the b was in fact once pronounced. Likewise, the silent b in words in -bt- is an etymological insertion intended to bring the spelling closer to the Latin etymon; compare the original French words doute (“doubt”), dette (“debt”) and Old French soutil (“subtle”) from which the English words were derived.
