16th century Middle French athéisme, from athée (“atheist”), a loan from Ancient Greek ἄθεος (átheos, “godless”, from ἀ- (a-, “without”) +‎ θεός (theós, “deity, god”)). First English attestation dates to 1587 (OED).

1. A non-belief in deities.
