From 中期英語 among, amang, amonge, amange, from 古期英語 amang, onġemang, equivalent to a- +‎ mong (“crowd; group; throng”). Cognate with Saterland Frisian monk, monken (“among”), West Frisian mank (“among”), Dutch mank, maank (“among”), German Low German mank, manken (“among”), dialectal German mang (“among”).
