Probably from 古期英語 eald (“old”) and clif (“cliff”), meaning "the high land long occupied". Possibly from the 古期英語 personal name Alda, but this is unlikely. Coates (2000) rejects the proposed specifics and suggests a Proto-Brythonic/Cumbric equivalent of Welsh allt (“cliff”).
