Friends Locked

eileen_donovan

Welcome to the journal of Eileen Donovan. I write fanfiction in the Queer as Folk fandom, specifically, Brian Kinney/Justin Taylor stories since I am a dedicated B/J shipper. :) This is my main journal where the majority of my fic can be found.

Please note: Many of my fics are locked, although I've left a few unlocked to give you an idea of what my writing is like. Please leave a comment if you'd like to be friended. Your complete birth date must be in your profile since I don't friend anyone under eighteen. I'm sorry, but I do not friend blank journals. [A blank journal is one without any posts in it, nothing where I can get a sense of who you are as a person. Having information on your user profile might sway me if it was extensive, but I prefer to see an actual post or two or three, something that tells me you're real.] I also will not automatically friend you back if you friend me, because I like to be asked. Thank you!

If you're looking for a particular fic, check out the Master List of Fic, or the TAGS.

If you're unhappy here but don't want to lose touch with everyone you've known all these years, why not re-locate to Dreamwidth? A number of people did it years ago, including me. It was easy to do and they have none of the problems you've identified here. It takes a little while to upload all your data, but it's well worth it having everything in a location that feels like LJ used to feel. Give it a try!

Please note: I have nothing to do with Dreamwidth other than my work being on their site. In all the years since I made my transfer, I've never had a problem with them. :)

Finally!

I've waited all week, anxious and wondering if there would ever be joy again what with you-know-who doing every stupid, ridiculous thing he could to sabotage this election. (That, I'm sure, will go on for awhile, but we seem to be going beyond it and having that long overdue celebration!)

I am so happy! Joe Biden is the President-elect and Kamala Harris is the Vice-President-elect. Finally, an end to these last four years is within our reach! Our nation has been saved!

I'll take all the joy this brings. Believe me, I need it! 😊

Tonight my grandson will see Paul McCartney in concert at Dodger Stadium. After introducing him to both the Beatles and Michael Jackson, Noah fell in love with the music. Michael, who I saw in concert numerous times, is no longer with us. When Paul went on tour, though, Noah, who will be 18 in September, knew he had to go for it. He's taking his girlfriend, Tessa, who only became aware of the Beatles's music when Noah played it for her. Now they will see one of the Fab Four and start their own memories! 🎸🥁

Jacqueline Susann’s Valley of the Dolls

eileen_donovan
The film version of Jacqueline Susann’s Valley of the Dolls is considered as one of the worst movies ever made, a camp classic or both. Which makes it perfect fodder for a live reading of the screenplay. This weekend Wilson Cruz will play Neely O’Hara as part of an all-star cast in two readings that serve as benefits for the Alcott Center for Mental Health and the Los Angeles LGBT Center. The readings take place on Friday and Saturday at the Renberg Theatre.

My two favorite fandoms come together in this event. 👇

The complete cast of Valley of the Dolls is Steve Bluestein as Ted Casablanca/Claude Cardot; Wilson Cruz as Neely O’Hara; Joely Fisher as Narrator (Fri); Mo Gaffney as Bellamy; Robert Gant as Kevin Gilmore; Tom Lenk as Mel Anderson; Greg Louganis as Tony Polar; Alec Mapa as Anne Wells; Laraine Newman as Narrator (Sat); Sheryl Lee Ralph as Helen Lawson; Gordon Thomson as Lyon Burke; Joan Van Ark as Miriam Polar; Bruce Vilanch as Jennifer North and Marissa Jaret Winokur as Miss Steinberg

For anyone who doesn't know, Wilson Cruz plays Dr. Hugh Culber in Star Trek: Discovery, which just ended its second magnificent season. And Robert ... well, we all know who he is! And they aren't the only familiar names either!

Both Robert and Wilson are delightful people: funny, compassionate, very talented. I wish I could get down to L.A. to see them. If you happen to live anywhere close, I think it'll be a great evening of fun!

This is happening on Friday and Saturday in Los Angeles. If you're interested, here's the link.

The Slippery Slope of Complicity

When was the last time centrist talking heads declared, “Donald Trump just became president” (because he bombed someone, or something like that)? I think it’s been more than a year. At this point, you have to be a truly fanatical practitioner of bothsidesism not to see that Trump is every bit as terrible a human being, and every bit as much a menace to the republic, as some of us warned when all the cool kids were busy snarking about Clinton’s emails.

The real news of the past few weeks isn’t that Trump is a wannabe Mussolini who can’t even make the trains run on time. It’s the absence of any meaningful pushback from Congressional Republicans. Indeed, not only are they acquiescing in Trump’s corruption, his incitements to violence, and his abuse of power, up to and including using the power of office to punish critics, they’re increasingly vocal in cheering him on.

Make no mistake: if Republicans hold both houses of Congress this November, Trump will go full authoritarian, abusing institutions like the I.R.S., trying to jail opponents and journalists on, er, trumped-up charges, and more — and he’ll do it with full support from his party.

You have to vote, folks, and it has to be for the Dems. Vote for anyone else and you risk Trump not only doing more horrible stuff, but getting reelected. That can't happen. You have to vote and your family members who aren't Trumpsters have to vote and your 18+ kids, your neighbors, everyone you know. Please take this seriously. And please don't think it doesn't matter or that it doesn't effect you. If 45 remains in office, it will effect you. Trust me, it will!

Make your plan now, folks. Make sure you're registered. Find out where your polling place is. Call your friends/family and organize a get-together that day. Make a plan to call one another the night before, to remind people. Maybe plan to sit down for coffee afterwards. Do whatever you can, but make sure you VOTE and, yes, I mean for the Democratic candidates. This is not the time to "protest," or vote for some weirdo on the ballot. The stakes are too fucking high. We all need to be informed and alert. As Claude says, it's our Democracy.

Someone on Twitter (who likes Matt Damon) posted a tweet about this movie being on a TV channel I didn't recognize, Get TV. It was originally aired on TNT and hails from 1995, so I knew it was pre-Good-Will-Hunting not to mention The Talented Mr. Ripley, The Rainmaker, Saving Private Ryan -- a lot of early Matt before the Bourne and Ocean movies made him a huge movie star.

I discovered that I had that channel, so I recorded the movie and watched it last night. It starred Tommy Lee Jones, Sissy Spacek, Sam Shepard, Frances McDormand and a few other familiar faces, so it had good credentials. The story took place in Texas just as the first cars where appearing. Tommy Lee's character was an aging cowboy, who'd spent his life wandering wherever he wanted, leaving the responsibility for the family farm to his brother. He comes back to the brother, sister-in-law, and two nephews just as they face a crisis.

Obamacare: Has it Impacted Your Life?
Obama
eileen_donovan
From an email sent by the Democrats:

Friend --

If the Republican Party gets their way, nearly 30 million people will lose their health care coverage.

That's 30 million people who could be placed in a position where they're made to choose between staying current on their medical bills or putting food on the table.

One of those 30 million people could be your cousin, your neighbor, your coworker, or a parent whose child sits next to yours in school every day. One of them could be you.

The fight for affordable care is bigger than politics. It's a fight to say that we won't turn our backs on each other when someone needs us the most. It's a fight about our humanity.

The impact that President Obama's health care reforms have made on people's lives is very real. So we're calling on folks to share their health care stories so Republicans can understand exactly what's at stake when they vote to repeal our progress.

If you have one, then share your story with us now:

If you didn't see this on SNL, it's worth a look. It's long, but the pertinent part comes in the beginning and speaks to the media's propensity to ignore alarming allegations against Trump while continually pivoting to Clinton and her email woes. For me, it spoke pointedly about this frustrating fact of the campaign. It's funny and also a poke in the media's eye!

After my post yesterday, which is here, one of the commenters, bksbracelet, who lives in Australia, but recently took a fabulous vacation seeing the U.S., wrote this (used with her permission):

Omg I wish I could vote as the outcome also effects Australia. On my recent trip to the US I often asked people who they were going to vote for and often it was either Trump or not voting at all. So I am with you it is far from a done deal! And the thought of that meglomanic controlling most of the western world is truly frightening.
Funy thing is how skilled I got not showing my horror every time someone said "oh Trump of course " lol

Not only that, but if you look at the comments for that post, you'll see two other non-Americans who commented and are quite worried by the idea of a President Trump. So we have even more responsibility to see that the Orange Cheeto doesn't end up not just terrorizing America, but the whole world.

Two predictions as to the outcome of this election. One shows Hillary winning big; the other says that right now, it's a tie. There's only one way to make sure we end up with the first and, yes, it's the same old thing: VOTE!

It doesn't matter if you think other people have it covered, so you can just let it slid--no, you can't. It's wrong to say your vote won't count--it will. Please don't tell me you're not a big fan of Hillary, so you're just sitting this one out. Here's the thing. The LGBTQ community stands to be directly and harshly affected by a Donald Trump presidency. Most of us here support and/or are LGBTQ folk. We can't let that happen, so if you don't like Hillary, vote anyway. She won't blow up the world and she can put together coherent sentences anytime she wants! Make a plan so it gets done. Too much is at stake. ♥

New evidence exposes the Sugar Research Foundation’s sweet, sweet lies
Brian-Gorgeous Colors
eileen_donovan
In a turn of events that shouldn’t surprise any reasonable person with a distrust of industry-funded research, a study published Monday by the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) Internal Medicine provides evidence of an actual conspiracy designed to downplay the negative health effects of eating sugar, and instead transfer blame for coronary heart disease to the influence of fat and cholesterol.

According to researchers Cristin Kearns, Laura Schmidt, and Stanton Glantz, internal documents from the Sugar Research Foundation (who are now known as the Sugar Association) viewed in combination with newly discovered historical records, reveal a concerted effort to suppress information showing that consuming sugar is, well, incredibly bad for you. The cover up was achieved by paying researchers in the 1960s to produce work which specifically refuted growing evidence that sugar consumption was related to coronary heart disease, a position the industry still maintains to this day.

My endocrinologist (diabetes doctor) has been pushing this for some time. If you want to lose weight, eat more fat and less sugar/carbs. It'll do you a world of good. All the Coke, cookies, donuts, Snickers, and the like are what's making us fat, not the bacon! I know, not an easy thing to turn your back on, lol! However, let me just say this: I'm already a diabetic. If you can, save yourself!

Matt Damon Gives the Commencement Address at MIT
Matt2

Matt Damon gave the commencement address this morning at MIT. I've come to believe that he's the king of self-deprecation because he opened with this: The list of commencement speakers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology is suitably impressive – Nobel Prize winners and past presidents, governors, and senators among them. “And who did you get?” Matt Damon joked Friday morning as he began his address to the class of 2016. “A guy who did the voice for a cartoon horse.”

Of course, in his younger years, he also mopped the floors at MIT ... at least his character, Will Hunting, the math genius, did. So for his first ever commencement address, it was fitting that he speak at MIT. And since Cambridge happens to be his hometown, I'm betting he was thrilled. ♥

French Expert Wanted!
Jason Bourne-4
eileen_donovan
Is there anyone left on my Friends' List who is French? A native speaker? :)

Those of you familiar with Jason Bourne know that he spoke many languages. In the thing I'm writing, he's in Paris and I'm getting my French from Google. I had a lovely friend who'd grown up in France, but lived in England. He used to get me the French I needed, but he also explained a lot of the shadings in the language, i.e., you say it this way to a stranger, but to your beloved mother, this way. Not sure Google can do that.

I also have a question about grocery stores in Paris. Google (my dear friend!) tells me that, yes, there are supermarkets in Paris. They may not be Walmarts and take up several city blocks, but you can shop for all your needs in them. There are even certain chains listed and, yes, pictures. I always thought that in Paris, you went from one specialty shop to another to do your shopping. Perhaps you can now do both? Does anyone know?

This isn't a major point, but I hate messing with someone's culture and sounding like a big, dumb American who doesn't know better! ♥

Update: The translation is being done! I could, however, still use some insight on supermarkets in Paris. :)

Dear Folks,

In case you're one of those astute people who misses nothing, I've changed the name of my journal to eileen_donovan. Nothing else has changed, just that.

I did it to be more inclusive because I am planning on posting fic outside the Queer as Folk fandom. I am not, however, leaving QAF or vowing to never write another story in said fandom. Nope, not at all. I'm expanding my writing, which will benefit Brian and Justin because I'll write even stronger stories. I've got ten years worth of Queer as Folk on this journal, so I have no intention of turning my back on it or anyone who loves those boys. I do too, but, like I said, I'm expanding!

With much love,

Eileen ♥

"Jason Bourne" Featurette
Jason Bourne-4
eileen_donovan

In this, Matt says that the first question he's asked everywhere he goes is, "Are you going to do another Bourne movie?" He says that doesn't bother him at all. "I don't mind being followed around by Jason Bourne. I like Jason Bourne."

You know what? That's why those of us obsessed with the movies like Jason Bourne too. Matt infuses this man-- who could be viewed negatively--as very vulnerable and human, a man who wanted to "protect American lives," but ended up deceived and fundamentally changed by the CIA. Now, in this footage, Jason is trying to cope with "the thoughts in his head."

From this featurette, I'm guessing that Paul Greengrass, Matt Damon, the script writers, and Universal pictures are attempting to pivot away from "Jason Bourne the guy who doesn't know who he is" to "Jason Bourne the $100 million dollar weapon." Which could mean even more Bourne films! Yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The author of The Martian offers three critical steps for new writers
The Martian-Science
eileen_donovan
Given the phenomal success of "The Martian," Andy Weir is in a position to know what works and what doesn't! This is good advice:

1) You have to actually write. Daydreaming about the book you’re going to write someday isn’t writing. It’s daydreaming. Open your word processor and start writing.

2) Resist the urge to tell friends and family your story. I know it’s hard because you want to talk about it and they’re (sometimes) interested in hearing about it. But it satisfies your need for an audience, which diminishes your motivation to actually write it. Make a rule: The only way for anyone to ever hear about your stories is to read them.

3) This is the best time in history to self-publish. There’s no old-boy network between you and your readers. You can self-publish an ebook to major distributors (Amazon, Barnes and Noble, etc.) without any financial risk on your part.

No, The Martian was not real. But that didn’t stop scores of Twitter users from speaking up about Mark Watney’s supposed terrible treatment while he was stuck on Mars.

That’s right – after seeing the film in theaters, scores of moviegoers assumed The Martian was based on a true story, some even going so far as to think the fictional Watney was in real trouble. So to help clear this up once and for all, The Martian is a work of fiction, Mark Watney is fictional and Matt Damon is doing just fine.
