En marzo de 2017 tuve el placer de participar en el I. Congreso de Bioética en la Universidad de ... more En marzo de 2017 tuve el placer de participar en el I. Congreso de Bioética en la Universidad de La Laguna, dedicado a temas de vulnerabilidad, justicia y salud global. La organizadora Janet Delgado, a quien agradezco la invitación, me pidió preparar y dinamizar una sesión que tuviera como ingrediente principal una película, la que yo quisiera. Sin pensarlo dos veces elegí Never Let Me Go, que conocía desde hace unos años, y que me llevó a la novela homónima de Kazuo Ishiguro, premio nobel de literatura en 2017. Desde entonces la he leído y releído, en el original y la traducción al castellano, y también he vuelto a la película, solo y en grupo. Esta última opción me parece la mejor, porque permite explorar los aspectos éticos de maneras que cada uno por separado no hubiera previsto. Para no imponer mi visión de la película a los demás, yo me limito a no apagar todas las luces, a presentar el contexto de la película sin arruinar la trama, y a invitar a que tomen notas durante la proyección para compartirlas después. Así viajan las historias, de lectura en relectura. Cuando está viva, la cultura se mueve de boca en boca, circula de soporte en soporte y versión en versión. Propicia relaciones imprevistas o improbables. En tanto que entramado de relaciones significativas, la capacidad de la cultura para influir en nuestro destino a veces es mayor de lo que se piensa. Henry David Thoreau's life and writings are notoriously resilient-they have remained relevant thr... more Henry David Thoreau's life and writings are notoriously resilient-they have remained relevant throughout crisis and change in contemporary societies. This could be because readers have found in Thoreau an ongoing awareness of some humanizing/dehumanizing features of a world increasingly shaped by science and technology. Metaphors can facilitate the public's engagement with some emancipatory aspects of science that are increasingly disappearing from the contemporary world (Pilkington 2016; Garcés 2017). Through a discussion of the bream passage in Thoreau's 1858 journal, and the metaphors used in connection with this particular fish, the paper shows how Thoreau managed to establish an emotional connection between the reader's world and the world of science, thus reuniting knowledge and empowerment through scientific culture (as opposed to the "two cultures" thesis). The conclusion is that one of the most interesting uses of Thoreau today could be the radical illustration or enactment of a wide set of rapports or reactions to scientific activities. Because his work provides a permanent resource of emotional reactions to science-including wonder, perplexity, inquiry and critique-it could help re-humanize science by means of an enlargement of the emotional palette used in scientific culture communication.

Based on a recent actionresearch at the University of the Basque Country, the paper suggests specific measures such as making time to celebrate university cultures; opening up spaces for creativity and change; and granting autonomy to those culture makers already present in campus. This recommendation is illustrated by describing the creation of a scenic and performative arts society in the Gipuzkoa campus.

Desde ese punto de vista privilegiado, Páll* fue consciente de las demandas que la sociedad contemporánea hace a las instituciones de educación superior, especialmente a una universidad pública y "nacional", como es la de Islandia. Las universidades -se dice-son entidades difíciles de gobernar, refractarias al cambio y sin capacidad de adaptación o liderazgo, en parte debido a que están integradas por docentes que no rinden cuentas y permanecen cómodamente instalados en su torre de marfil, ajenos a la industria y a la empresa ( ). This article analyzes the “GAIA journey”, an initiative hosted by the Presencing Institute (PI) b... more This article analyzes the “GAIA journey”, an initiative hosted by the Presencing Institute (PI) between March and June 2020, by discussing its precedents in terms of social art, and its potential for facilitating social change as a container in which a multitude of communities of practice can re-imagine the future. GAIA (Global Activation of Intention and Action) emerged during and in response to the COVID-19 global pandemic and associated lockdown. It aimed to virtually bring together communities to bear witness to the current moment as a way of mobilizing social change. It included online and offline interaction, both local and global, but this article focuses only on the online-global aspect of the journey. Our hypothesis is that GAIA is a contemporary instance of “social art” as initially conceptualized, among others, by Henry David Thoreau in the 19th century and Joseph Beuys in the 20th. There are currently a number of preconceived ideas about the university and its possible fates wi... more There are currently a number of preconceived ideas about the university and its possible fates within our socially latent future. Some of these assumptions can restrict our capacity to imagine much of the actual potential scenarios at present. Following the Integral Futures perspective, here we stress the relevance of its interior cultural development as a key factor when thinking about the futures of and for the university. Instead of defining specific foresight strategies, however, this paper suggests how some current university extension activities can facilitate a productive cultural basis to enhance their forethought capabilities. It specifically addresses the potential of cultivating Communities of Practice (CoPs), through which institutions are able to connect with wide-ranging cultural domains, from both the inner and outer worlds, and making organizational culture more prone to unbiased imagination.
