There are many people I wish to acknowledge and thank for their support throughout my PhD. First ... more There are many people I wish to acknowledge and thank for their support throughout my PhD. First and foremost, I must thank my family who have continuously supported me for many years, with great encouragement. Particularly, my late grandmother who devoted all her love to her family throughout her life, although I could not be at her deathbed. I also want to acknowledge my mother and father for supporting and watching over me with endless love and patience. I would especially like to thank my younger brother, Mr Lew, Chan Hee, who played an important role in my family, during my absence. Without the endorsement and support of my family, it would not have been possible for me to complete this thesis. Finally, I would like to thank my first cousin Mr Ryu, Do-Hee, for his support. I am also very grateful to my two supervisors, Dr Peter Moles and Mr Tom Brown, for their kindness, comments and enthusiasm during this project. They gave this great opportunity to a man of average intelligence and showed me how to understand finance and economics from various angles. Particularly, my principal supervisor, Dr Peter Moles, who gave me the ability to see financial phenomena through scholarly eyes, devoted an uncountable number of hours of his time in order to discuss, in detail, problems with my research, every week, for the last six years.
