Sidonius Apollinaris, c.430 – c.485, poet and letter-writer, aristocrat, administrator and bishop, is one of the most distinct voices to survive from Late Antiquity and an eyewitness of the end of Roman power in the west.

The Edinburgh Companion to Sidonius Apollinaris is the first work of its kind, giving a full account of all aspects of his life and works and surveying past and current scholarship as well as new developments in research. This substantial and significant work of scholarship is divided into six thematic sections covering his social, political, linguistic, literary and prosopographical context as well as extensive new scholarship on the manuscript tradition and history of reception.

This interdisciplinary book combines the utility of a key research tool for the study of Sidonius with a significant offering of wholly new scholarly research.

A landmark in the SAxxi project, this integrated and international collection of essays explores ... more A landmark in the SAxxi project, this integrated and international collection of essays explores the potential for a complete commentary on Sidonius' works, starting with a retrospective on Sidonius scholarship up to the present, and then focusing in turn on his verse and his prose. The strangeness of his poetry triggers a critical contemporary assessment and a proposal for better understanding through the theory of Cultural Memory; there follow case studies of the panegyrics and of poems within the letters, and examinations of his intertextuality with Horace and Claudian. Research into Sidonius’ prose is represented by two contrasting essays on the composition of the letter collection, by a demonstration of how Sidonius constructs history to create contemporary identity, and by a groundbreaking chapter applying text linguistics to the letters. An appendix fills a significant scholarly lacuna with Helga Köhler’s indices to her commentary on Letters, Book 1 (Heidelberg, 1995). This book will be important for both literary and historical scholars of the late Roman world, for both Classicists and Medievalists.

The idea for this book was Alan Cameron's own. This collection of his articles, book chapters, an... more The idea for this book was Alan Cameron's own. This collection of his articles, book chapters, and review articles on late Roman art and archaeology was intended to be the third in a trilogy, of which the first two volumes were Wandering Poets and Other Essays on Late Greek Literature and Philosophy (New York, 2016) and Studies in Late Roman Literature and History (Bari, 2016). He had also made a collection of articles back in the 1980s, Literature and Society in the Early Byzantine World (London, 1985). It is testament to his scholarly productivity over more than half a century that this and the other three books put together contain less than half of his published articles. (A full list of his publications can be found in W.V. Harris and Anne Hunnell Chen [eds.], Late Antique Studies in Memory of Alan Cameron [Leiden, 2021], xix-xxx). Before he died, Alan made a selection of chapters for this book and collected together the digital files, from scans or from his old word-processing files. He and I also had initial discussions about publication in the Late Antique History and Religion series. He had not, however, edited or updated the documents in any way.

Periodisations are inevitable and useful short-cuts in conceptualising the past. But they are oft... more Periodisations are inevitable and useful short-cuts in conceptualising the past. But they are often inherited without reflexion or a clear idea of their origins; in literature in particular they can endow fashionable aesthetic judgments with lasting canonical force in ways that can be intellectually harmful. Latin is a classical language with a literary history of over two millennia, with highly differentiated levels of survival from different periods, and with a complex scholarly tradition: its periodisation is both important and challenging. I open with three vignettes of attitudes to Latin literature from eighteenth-century England, fourteenth-century Italy and second-century Rome, which in their different ways show the tendency to esteem antiquity above all, though the conception of antiquity changes. After general considerations on literary periodisation and its application to the unusual case of Latin, I look at six possible ways in which the history of Latin literature has been periodised or could be better periodised, dealing mainly with antiquity down to ca. 600 and with a recurring focus on two particularly dynamic periods of literary change: the last half-century before Christ and the fourth and fifth centuries of our era. An examination of changes in language, metre, prose rhythm, politics, religion, and book history is used to challenge and test established periodisations by looking at the subject in different ways, and to suggest the benefits of a greater acknowledgement of continuities and the longue durée.

This article offers an edition of the paratextual material transmitted with Sidonius’ collection ... more This article offers an edition of the paratextual material transmitted with Sidonius’ collection of poems (carm. 1-24). These paratexts have not been fully included in modern critical editions, which have often deviated arbitrarily and misleadingly from the transmitted titles. The article then highlights some of the details and implications of the paratexts for our understanding of the collection’s formation and the individual poems. There is a focus throughout on the question of whether and to what extent paratexts may go back to the author or a very early editor.

After his voyage along the Mediterranean coast from Rome to Gaul in autumn 417, Rutilius Namatian... more After his voyage along the Mediterranean coast from Rome to Gaul in autumn 417, Rutilius Namatianus passes out of historical knowledge, and the poem in which he recorded his journey seems to have been almost entirely unknown in late antiquity and the Middle Ages. Rutilius' most certain late antique reader was another Gallic aristocrat, Sidonius, who alludes to De reditu suo in both poems and letters. This article surveys the identifiable allusions to Rutilius in Sidonius' oeuvre.

The only two authoritative manuscripts of Ammianus Marcellinus to survive to the present day were... more The only two authoritative manuscripts of Ammianus Marcellinus to survive to the present day were produced in Germany in the first half of the ninth century: Vaticanus Latinus 1873 from Fulda (V), and a fragmentary manuscript from Hersfeld now preserved in Kassel (M). This article challenges the consensus that V is a copy of M. Taking into account recently uncovered fragments of M (new transcriptions of which are offered in the Appendix), we argue that both are copies of the same damaged original, and discuss the implications for the editing of Ammianus and for our understanding of Carolingian scholarship. The only two authoritative manuscripts of Ammianus Marcellinus to survive to the present day were... more The only two authoritative manuscripts of Ammianus Marcellinus to survive to the present day were produced in Germany in the first half of the ninth century: Vaticanus Latinus 1873 from Fulda (V), and a fragmentary manuscript from Hersfeld now preserved in Kassel (M). This article challenges the consensus that V is a copy of M. Taking into account recently uncovered fragments of M (new transcriptions of which are offered in the Appendix), we argue that both are copies of the same damaged original, and discuss the implications for the editing of Ammianus and for our understanding of Carolingian scholarship.
