He was a committed egalitarian, and in favour of a republican form of government 2 , he therefore perceived that the Revolution could potentially represent an exciting leap forward in the progress of humanity 3 . However, unlike his contemporary Edmund Burke 4 , Kant was not interested in passing judgment on the events of 1789 specifically; rather more he was concerned to develop a general theory of how morality related to politics.
