After the Snow

23 Feb

I really wasn’t prepared for cold and snow and blowing. I worked to get my trails scooped so I could put out feed pans and haul hay and water.

Popcorn, Shelby, Pluto and Dee (begging for seconds of grain)

Thankfully, my nephew brought his backhoe out and did my driveway.

It was quite a shock for the animals as well. Those huge temperature swings are hard on them.

And Gabe was gaining weight and his hair had just started growing back in.  But, I have a heat lamp in there for him and put the food in the building, and I am keeping a close eye on him to see if I need to move him back to the Morton building.

I did shut the door and turn the heat lamp on for Wanda also.  She doesn’t have someone to snuggle with in there.

I wish Ava would be nice and share food with her mom, but that’s not going to happen.

Ava does not share food with anyone.

And Wanda would pick on Antigone.  She would be my first choice to put in with Wanda because when I came home on Thursday in the sleet, Antigone was outside.  So I moved her into the buck room.  She’s by herself also.

Antigone does appreciate the room service

Anyhow, I got my paths cleared and everyone is getting food and I’m keeping an eye on everyone.  And it’s supposed to slowly warm up to above average temperatures by mid-week.  I’m not sure that’s what I wanted either.

Change in Color

22 Feb

Well, we are no longer brown. The drop in temperatures had been in the forecast for a while.  It was coming with a front that was going to give us some rain and wraparound snow.  But with the really warm temperatures we’ve had, it wasn’t really expected to last in my area.  Until they changed it into a winter storm warning and 6 – 9 inches of snow.

It was really sleet by the time I got home on Thursday, but it didn’t take long to finish turning into snow.

Sky on the deck before bed–still snowing

In the middle of the night, the winds picked up and really started howling.  By the time I got up Friday morning, it was crazy drifted.

Ice on the side of the barn; drifts in front.

I should have put a tarp back over the door.

That takes some scooping.

Luckily, I had remembered to plug all of my water heaters back in.  Otherwise, they would have been giant ice cubes.

Everyone was all huddled inside.

My nephew estimated us at about 9 inches.  And now it’s cold, everything is white, and I’m back to full chores.

Another Weather Change

21 Feb

After a week of really nice weather, we’ve finally switched back to more normal temperatures for February. I’m not complaining, but today is more leftover pictures of everyone enjoying the nice weather we had.

A calf came to see what I was doing trespassing on the Back Forty (spoiler: I was making a campaign video).

Another one of Skittles with her ears up–a miracle!

I had to plug my heaters in all the water tubs back in. (Dee getting a drink)

Hope the weather is good wherever you are.
