The European Biostasis Foundation (or "EBF") is a research foundation focused on Biostasis research and education. It is a non-profit, tax-exempt foundation and is controlled by a Board of Trustees. The EBF operates a biomedical research and storage facility in Rafz, Switzerland.

Biostasis is a biomedical procedure that uses leading-edge technology to preserve and protect tissue against degradation for decades or centuries.
It uses low temperatures and special protectants to slow biological processes to practical standstill, providing time for future medical technology to become available.

The foundation supports a large variety of internal and external research projects. Projects include the discovery and testing of new vitrification solutions, processes for cooling and warming as well as novel quality assurance concepts and metrics.

The EBF understands itself as a challenger in the field of biostasis. The three main factors of uniqueness will be a focus on building highly professional operations, a global focus starting with Europe and Asia and a long-term research focus to improve quality.

Biostasis services will be provided by other, new organizations. EBF provides long-term secure storage for organizations such as Tomorrow Biostasis GmbH and others.

In a nutshell, biostasis is achieved by a cryoprotective agent and very low temperatures. During vitrification, the cryoprotectives are infused into the tissues, organ or body, thereby replacing fluids with the protective solution. The cryoprotectant serves as an "antifreeze" and prevents fluids from freezing to ice crystals which would irreparably destroy the cells.
