Hi everyone and thanks for joining us today. Here we are again to share with you the third week of our sewalong. Over the next 15 weeks, Verena from einfach bunt Quilts are here to support our quilting community with tips and tricks and well as soon good old fashioned quilting fun with our Transparendo Sewalong (#transaprendosal). Are you looking forward to it? We are too!

This week's hashtag is #transparendosalw3 for Week Three.

Please sign up for our newsletters to keep on top of the sewalong.

The Pattern Book

Today is our third week of the sewalong. If you don't have the pattern, you can order from my Etsy webshop - Transparendo The Transparency Sampler Quilt from Karen Ackva - Etsy.de. If you live in Germany, you can also pick up some great coordinated fabrics packs especially curated by Verena for the sewalong - einfach bunt Quilts. We highly encourage you to get the book! There a lot of helpful ideas listed including coloring pages to color your own design.

Digital Alternative

If you don't want to purchase the softcover version of the book, you can pick up the digital version split into 15 sections. After purchasing the sewalong subscription pattern, look forward to receiving one section (15 sections in total) each week for the duration of the sewalong. It is a fun way to know exactly what to be working on for the next seven days. Receive a new assignment each week!

Sewalong Schedule

What is in store for you over the next fifteen weeks? Take a look at our line up. Each week there is a fun, new assignment to complete. The blocks accelerate in skill level with each new block and build upon previous blocks. Learn all types of new skills such as flying geese, nesting and twisting seams, and cutting extra-large pieces of fabric for squares and triangles.

Post your progress on Instagram with the hashtags: #transparendosal and the week -  #transparendosalw1 (week one, etc.) for your chance to be entered into a drawing. If you don't have instagram, you can send me a photo with your fabric selection at 72 dpi with a resolution of 800 pixels or less. The following Sunday, one lucky recipient will be chosen at random. Our sewalong is open internationally, so get out those sewing machines ladies (and gents)!

Weekly Prizes

In Week Three, we have a set of Taylor Seville Magic Pins, 1 x Fork Pins and 1 x Extra-ong Pins sponsored by Steidl & Becker (Wholesale Distributor)

and one crib-sized, cotton batting sponsored by Quilter's Dream Batting. You pick which one you want from the ones shown below!

Last week we would talked about auditioning your fabric selections for contrast and interest. The original pattern uses a two-colorway selection of pinks and grays in a range of light, medium and dark as shown below. I chose to use a color value range of petrol, turquoise, pink, yellow and a low volume white. The background color I chose as a tone-on-tone gray.  Read more about the use of color and color value in the Transparendo book.

I really wanted to see how these two fabric selections would work together, so I mocked up the colors with EQ8 - the quilt designing and planning software from the Electric Quilt Company.

EQ8 Lesson

Before we get started, I was asked if the EQ8 file could be sent to those who have purchased the Trasparendo book. My challenge to you, is to open your EQ8 program (if you have one) and design the blocks yourself to exercise your own skills. If you don't have the program, use technical drawing paper.

Most of the blocks in this series are rather simple using a nine patch grid. Design and add each of the blocks week for week.

Let's design Block Two - Hovering Hawks together in EQ8.

Open your EQ8 program. Start a new file. Name it Transparendo Lessons.

1. Click on the Block Worktable.
2. Click on NEW BLOCK.
3. Click on EASY DRAW.

Now we want to create the 16-patch block or a 4 x 4 grid.

4. Click on GRID.
5. Enter COLUMNS as 4 and ROWS as 4.
6. Left-Mouse-Click, hold and drag the cursor from the upper left corner of the block on the block worktable.

Drag and hold all the way down to the bottom right corner. Release the left mouse button to get the 4 x 4 grid. You can color this block for Block One - Love Birds in your color scheme. Add the color scheme to the + PROJECT SKETCHBOOK.

Let's make the Hovering Hawks block.

7. Make sure only the SNAPPING OPTIONS is turned on to SNAP GRIDS TO POINTS ON WORKTABLE only. The other two options should be click off and not on.
8. Click on the PENCIL (LINE) to draw.
9. Hover your starting point, left-mouse-click the point, drag to the bottom right corner, release.

If you are wondering why there is already a block in there, I imported it to trace the image. You won't actually see that image on the worktable. It is easier for me to trace the block than reference from the book.

After all lines for the block are drawn, COLOR your block.

10. Click on the COLOR tab.
11. Click on the PAINTBRUSH tool. This tool allows you to paint one patch at a time.
12. Click on the COLOR or FABRIC you wish to use.
13. Click on the patch on the drawn block. Tip: If you make a mistake, click ALT + y (German keyboard: STRG + z) to undo.

Add the block to the Project Sketchbook.

14. Click on the + PROJECT SKETCHBOOK.

The first two blocks from the Transparendo Sewalong are now in your sketchbook. You can add to the quilt layout in the program or draw them by hand using technical drawing or gridded sketch paper.

If you don't have either one of those, you can use the included coloring sheet provided in the book. Add your own fabric swatches to the right side of the page to keep your project organized.

Remember, you should have adequate amounts of contrast in color value to achieve the block transparency effects. This is achieved through the light, medium and dark fabrics as well as a contrast in color. Read all about that in the Transparency book

Week 3 - Hovering Hawks

This block can get a little tricky due to the half-square-triangles. I prefer to make the HSTs larger and cut them down to-size afterwards. It makes for a better patch. The pressing directions are listed in the pattern. I recommend always pressing the HSTs open and then working from there. The rows can be pressed in any direction that best accentuates the points.

Here is the breakdown of the fabric placement using those five fabrics plus one background fabric.

Do you see the transparency in this block? I created a quick animated illustration of different color schemes to enhance the design. Do you recognize your block with your color scheme?

Hovering Hawks - Block Two in Transparendo Sewalong - #transparendosalw3

The fun thing about this block, is that when you turn it on it's side a new design is created, the hawks start to jump out even more to represent a typical Aztec design.

This Week's Tip

Don't iron or even press your fabric with every new sewn seam. Press with your finger or fingernail. This sames time and energy! Some quilters use a super cool tool for pressing such as a clapper or a wooden flat stick. Use what works best for you.

After the block is completely sewn together, then it is time to carefully set the seams. Too much ironing will stretch your fabric and distort it.

Transaparendo Sewalong - Week Two

Hi everyone and thanks for joining us today. I am really excited to start sharing our sewalong posts with you. Weekly Prizes

The second week, we have a set of Taylor Seville Magic Pins, 1 x Fork Pins and 1 x Extra-ong Pins sponsored by Steidl & Becker (Wholesale Distributor) and a fabric pack specially curated and sponsored by me with an array of fabrics I will be using in my new Transparendo quilt.

Last week we would talked about your fabric selection. The original pattern uses a two-colorway selection of pinks and grays in a range of light, medium and dark as shown below. I was undecided between the to fabric selections below. Read more about the use of color and color value in the Transparendo book.

I really wanted to see how these two fabric selections would work together, so I mocked up the colors with EQ8 - the quilt designing and planning software from the Electric Quilt Company.

This is what the quilt would look like if using the blues and yellows from the first image of fabrics above. I used the fabric colors provided in the program as a reference instead of actual fabric swatches provided by the manufacturer. This is a quick way to see what a quilt colorway can look like.

I really wanted to use a fun print or two, so I took the fox print and the dotty print to see if they could be fun together. This was a suggestion from my son; he thought the dark petrol was too dark for the quilt and preferred a softer look. My son has a very great sense for colors!

I couldn't find an image from the manufacturer with the original fabric, so I photgraphed the fabric myself. Next I imported the fabric to my program, applied a crop, then resized the image to 72 dpi from 300 dpi to become a workable image file. Then I added it as a fabric swatch to the program.

This is a quick preview of what the quilt would like with the dotty yellow/turquoise fabric. It uses both the dotty fabric and that cute fox fabric from Riley Blake. As you can see, there just isn't enough contrast due to similar colors in the prints. Although this would look great in other quilts, for this transparency quilt, it won't be enough difference to make me happy. I love contrast!

So I combined the fabrics from each image above and came up with the rendition below. It reminds be of a beautiful composition of both the sample quilt with dark black & blue as well as the pretty pink Transparendo cover quilt. What do you think?

Remember, you should have adequate amounts of contrast in color value to achieve the block transparency effects. This is achieved through the light, medium and dark fabrics as well as a contrast in color. Read all about that in the Transparency book

Week 2 - Love Birds

Now that I have my fabric selection mapped out it is time to start cutting the patches. After taking the photos, I realized that cute fox print was not used. Hmm. Should I break it back out and use that one instead? What do you think? Should I bring it back?

Here is the breakdown of the fabric placement using those five fabrics plus one background fabric.

Do you see the transparency in this block? I created a quick animated illustration of how the transparency filters overlap the original block and the final outcome. Even if you don't use fabrics that have gradient colors a shown in the final filter, you can "fake" the effect by using color value to fool the eye.

Love Birds - Block One in Transparendo Sewalong - #transparendosalw2

The fun thing about this block, is that you can audition your fabrics for contrast, value and interest. If you don't like the way it looks, you can start again. The patche sizes are all the same, so this block sews up with little effort. Press your rows in opposing directions. Press with a warm iron after all rows are sewn together. You should be able to sew this block together in one hour or less. You got this!

This Week's Tip

When I was younger, I just wanted to jump into a project especially when using pre-cut fabrics. If you choose to use precuts, you won't want to wash them due to the large amount of shrinkage. If you use yardage, as this pattern does, please wash your fabrics and test for color safeness. You don't want to invest the effort into making a quilt to have it bleed. So please, wash your fabrics on a gentle cycle with a gentle washing detergent. Use a color catcher too. It may prevent the colors from bleeding. Dry the fabrics in the dryer if you have one or if you think your final quilt will be put in the dryer as well. Otherwise, air dry. It will allow your fabrics to shrink properly. And lastly, iron your fabrics with steam and starch to get them crisp and flat.
  • Wash your fabrics.
  • Use a gentle detergent.
  • Use a gentle cycle.
  • Use a color catcher.
  • Dry for shrinkage.
  • Iron and starch.
I hope you are starting to have fun planning and sewing your Transparendo quilt together? I am definitely looking forward to sewing together the next block.

TRANSPARENDO - The Transparency Sampler Quilt

Hi everyone! I am so excited to share with you something I have been working on for the past FIVE MONTHS! I would like to introduce you to Transparendo - The Transparency Sampler Quilt, 12 Modern Blocks to Create a Masterpiece. This is my first official book with IBSNs. I can't believe it. I finally wrote a book and published it myself. I learned so much in the process too such as creating my own publishing company, being receptive to feedback, learning how to design cover artwork, and marketing my book. Are you curious?

Would you like to see the book cover?

Here it is! I really had a lot of fun designing the book cover too. At first, I wanted to put photos of the up-close beautiful quilting, but decided this looked like a more professional book cover. Are you interested and want to see more? Read on.

ISBN 978-3-98255760-1

As you might notice, the book is all about transparency. Each block is carefully illustrated with step-by-step instructions walking you through the process of creating transparency. You only need five fabrics plus a background fabric to create all of the stunning blocks in the pattern book.

How many pages does the book have?

The book has 78 pages and is professionally printed all in color.

What is included?

Cutting charts for each block, quick cutting chart for setting blocks and borders, coloring sheets for blocks and quilt, colorway ideas for your own quilt, three beautiful colorways with fabric requirements for each, beautiful photography and illustrations, three additional bonus blocks, pressing directions, and helpful tips and tricks are included.

What does the sampler look like?

Glad you asked that question. Here it is! This is the sampler featured in the book using the Sunrise colorway with Kona Cotton Solids. All of the fabric names are listed in the book.

Where can you get a copy of the book?

The book is available in my Etsy shop. Click here or on one of the images above to go there. I would be delighted to personally dedicate your book. Just leave your first name when ordering when asked for a dedication.

The book is also available in Germany at einfach bunt Quilts at Verena's online quilt shop. If you live outside of Germany, we are working on digital and print-on-demand editions that will be available in the fall 2023.

If you are a bookstore or patchwork store, feel free to buy wholesale books directly from the publisher. Write to [email protected].

What does the book cost?

The book cost 34,95€ and is protected under the "Buchpreisbindunggesetz." That means, no one is allowed to sell the book in Germany cheaper than the stated price, not even me. This is to protect smaller book and patchwork stores from being undersold by other bookstores. All stores are treated equal.

That is just way too much to pay! I'll sit this one out.

I get you. I really do. A lot of time and effort went into writing this book and that is a lot of money! More than five months went into writing the book. It is professionally printed. It was tested twice by me. The book was published by me which means, I am carrying the entire cost of printing and distributing the book. Let's hope it is a pure success story.

Additionally, six really amazing talented and professional quilters helped testing and proofing each of the blocks as well as the entire quilt. So, each block has been ceritified including perfect pressing instructions. It really is a true joy to read, look at, and to sew. The instructions are easy and the blocks are fun!

What's in it for you?

And, we have a couple of "treats" lined-up. We, Verena from einfach bunt Quilts, and I will be running a sewalong in the fall. That means, it is probably better to get your book now and start mapping out fabrics and blocks you would like to sew. Check out her online webshop for fabrics listed in the pattern!

How about a sewing day in Germany?

We've got you covered here as well. We have a sewing day planned on October 21, 2023 in Kloster-Roggenburg in Southern Germany! If you are interested, please contact Verena or me ([email protected]) with a short email reserving your seat.

We currently have 18 seats available for one fun-filled day starting at 10am until 6pm.

What awaits you on the sewing day?

Look forward to an awesome day of casual sewing, a full buffet-style lunch, afternoon coffee and cake and unlimted non-alcoholic refreshments. This will be an informal sewing day. If you want help with Transparendo, we will provide our expertise, tips and tricks but will not have an actual course on how to sew each block. It is more important that we are there to help you personally with any questions you may have about quilting and patchwork. The price for all of the fun will be 75€ per individual. An optional shared dinner after the event in the Kloster-Biergarten is not included.

Seats will fill up soon, so book today. Look forward to seeing you there.

Thanks for dropping by.

GeoOptics Quilt Pattern

Hi everyone! Thanks for stopping by to check out the new GeoOptics quilt pattern. I am really excited about sharing this quilt with you too. It has been an idea floating around in my head since the beginning of spring this year. I wanted to create a pattern using a simple and traditional block and flip it into something different and unexpected. And if you love mini quilts, there is a mini version just for you. I hope you will enjoy the pattern.

The log cabin block is one of the oldest quilt blocks around. In fact, you might have sewn it as your first ever quilt block. It was one of the first blocks I added to my repetoire and used a quick strip piecing method. We still have that quilt in our household after nearly 20 years!

Well, there is a sister block - the quarter log cabin. She is just one-quarter of the original block. Now, you could sew log cabin blocks together and cut them through the middle twice to get four slivered log cabins, but it is simpler to just sew the block below without slicing.

This block creates many exciting designs with simple rotations and repetition of blocks. Here are just a few common designs made with the quarter log cabin that you may already know:

I wanted to really maximize the interest of the quarter log cabin by spinning and rotating the blocks. I wanted more elements such as color value and color placement to really shape the design. I sat and tweeked for weeks until my idea evolved into my most favorite design - GeoOptics. See the use of darks, medium and light fabrics to ceate the design. What do you see? There is no wrong or right answer here.

In quilt design and pattern writing, it is very important that others understand what you are saying. So, this time, I wanted to get back in alignment with my own thinking and learning process. I wrote the pattern with little text, more diagrams and more tables. Hopefully you agree that this method is easier to understand especially if English is not your first language.

I sent out the preliminary patterns to my favorite quilt testers and was amazed to see what they delivered! I am always so stunned to see what others can do with my patterns.

This gorgeous version was created by Ute, who threw in just a hint of color to make it a stunning wall/art quilt. My eye just keeps dancing and dancing around the quilt discovering the different color pops.

Sewn by Ute of Uma.Saar

What truly illuminates this design is the use of color value – light, medium and darks and their placement within the design/blocks. The slow transition in color or value allows a secondary design to emerge. Do you see it?

But let’s kick it up a notch. What if we bring color into the design?

The original design of lights, mediums and darks is still there, but another design in rainbow transistion flows across the canvas diagonally. Isn’t it beautiful? The added use of rainbow fabrics for a pieced binding with the lightest color in the corner, frames the quilt nicely. This is another added feature to the quilt design. Of course you could just use a one color binding, but I love how the corners sparkle with the yellow color.

If you are looking for a quilting desing, you could go with really fancy custom quilting, but I think a practical allover quilt design also does the trick just as well. Here it is mocked up with an orange peel quilt motif in EQ8 - Electric Quilt Software.

If you have a large stash or want to make up a throw or queen size quilt with your favorite fat quarters, this pattern is perfect for you! Here is another one of the layouts included in the pattern. I will definitely be making this design as well! This pattern will truly become your go-to, patchwork pattern.

Just take a look at our next quilt from one of our pattern testers. I especially love the use of a dark background to bring out the colors. This beautiful quilt was made by Hanna. She chose one of the other four designs found in the pattern booklet. Just look at her sparkling color transition within her blocks!

Sewn by Hanna of hannas_liebe

There are four different size quilts each with the same adjusted block size. You can pick which quilt you prefer – mini, wall or art, throw or queens size. The skill level increases as the blocks and quilt gets smaller. The mini quilt is the hardest.

Hanna had so much fun sewing the pattern, she made the mini version as well. This is one of the other layouts listed in the pattern book. It truly is fun to spin this block around and come up with new designs!

Sewn by Hanna of hannas_liebe

I am currently finishing up the hand quilting on this beauty – the mini quilt version which finishes at 24” x 24”. I think it will make a great oversized pillow.

If all of these quilts are too colorful for you, take a look at Martina’s quilt, she is known for her soft use of soft and sublte shades. It is an amazing scrappy, tone-in-tone, low contrast quilt!

Sewn by Martina  of malu_27117

Are you just not into square quilts? Well, Ulrike had a very interested recipient who was eying her design in process, but wanted a true rectangular bed quilt. No problem – Ulrike and I talked about how she could stay true to the design. She added another row to the top and bottom with a continuation of the design. She also adjusted the borders to make them slightly thinner. The pattern is easily adjustable to whatever suits your needs and preferences.

Sewn by Ulrike of Ulrike_Brauns

May, another of our incredible pattern testers, decided to use the three-fabric design to create this lovely throw sized quilt. It is so stunning with a slight Christmasy touch, don't you think? She quilted it on her  home sewing machine with some awesome matchstick quilting. Check out a glimpse of the super cool striped binding!

Sewn by May of fabraholicquilts

I would like to thank our pattern testers for their awesome work! They all used their own fabric stashes, creativity and know-how to produce their very own one-of-a-kind quilts. Photos courtesy of the creators! They totally hit their designs out of the ballpark! Each one is so lovingly made with an eye to detail. We are so fortunate to have such a great crew!

I had so much fun making samples and testing the pattern myself, I just couldn’t stop. I first made the mini, the the wall, then a super fun scrappy, stash buster accented with Figo - Earth in black.

I had a lot of fun picking out the rainbow gradient fabrics from my stash. I have a lot of fat quarters but most of them are slightly cut into. When choosing shades and gradients, I tried to always have a very luminant color as the middle value and worked lighter and darker from there. It was a fun way to play around with some of the lighter, neglected fabrics in my stash.

During the cutting phase, I realized sometimes, there wasn't enough fabric, so I just picked out something else and rolled with it. It really was so much fun.

I asked the very talented quilter, teacher and shop owner, Sabine Feldmann of Quilt Oase to make a simple allover design, because this will be our new sofa quilt. My husband has already adopted it as his own. It finished at 70” x 70” and is wonderful for snuggling in the autumn months. I just love this allover design!

One day I was thinking about where or how to finish with a photoshooting of the Rainbow (Scrappy) Gradient quilt and wanted to incoroporate my home. I live along the Danube River in Germany, not more than one mile away. In the autumn months, it gets incredibly foggy but oh so much fun to go walking along the river. It's been really foggy around here, so I convinced my husband to go with me on Sunday mornging before our famous Sunday breakfast for a quick photoshoot. Let's give him two thumbs up for a great job!

You might have noticed that the quilt design is upside down. I rather like it that way with this backdrop and the seasonal mood to it. The blues represent the sky, the green the trees and the yellows and reds the fall leaves.

If you like what you see, you can purchase the printed ordigital pattern in my Etsy shop. Starting today and running through Sunday, enjoy 20% off all patterns!

Would you like to support your local quilt shop? You can also purchase at these stores in Germany:
