Metaphors, as an indispensable part of human life involving language, thought and action, transport the images, feelings, values, thought patterns, etc. that are deep-rooted in our cultures. This study investigates the metaphorical and metonymic uses of eight basic colour terms (black, white, red, green, yellow, blue, grey, and pink) in five languages: Modern Greek, English,
French, Portuguese, and Spanish. We study fixed expressions, lexical collocations of the structure AN (adjective+noun) and idioms. We verify the occurrences of these expressions, collected mostly from dictionaries and informants, through large comparable monolingual corpora, in order to study their frequencies and describe their behaviour in context, within-language variation and connotations. Findings show that the languages mostly share a range of phenomena, but there are also cross-linguistic differences. Applications of this study include descriptive and contrastive grammar, language teaching, lexicography and translation, among others. The originality of our project stems from the variety of colours and languages involved, including Modern Greek as the source language.

The research has been conducted in the framework of my PhD thesis entitled: "Grammar of names denoting color in Modern Greek. Theory and application in lexicography and teaching Modern Greek as a second/foreign language". At first, Ι study simple sentences (subject-verb-complement) and make a grouping of color terms based on the structures in which they appear, for example: Αυτό το χρώμα είναι το Χ χρώμα vs. Αυτό το χρώμα είναι Χ χρώμα ("This color is the color X" vs. "This color is the X color"). These structures allow us to clearly isolate two subcategories in the broader category of color denominations, general names and modifiers. First I study the two subclasses, highlighting their properties, and then I examine in details the subclass of general color names through structures that lead to further classifications, of both nouns and adjectives.

We notice that while from an ontological perspective the color adjectives seem to be entities that indicate a range that allows the gradation, in their combination with expressions denoting gradation or intensification exactly the opposite is true, as only in very specific cases color adjectives accept expressions that indicate the degree.

A set of specifications concerning the macrostructure and microstructure of the dictionary is presented and emphasis is put on discussing the options regarding the encoding and presentation of the data (entry lemma, color, meaning, function, translations, etc.), and the friendliness of both the lexicographer's and the final user's interface environments.

Yet, developing multimodal interfaces requires an understanding (and thus the observation and analysis) of human multimodal behavior. In the field of annotation of multimodal corpus, there is no standardized coding scheme. In this paper, we describe a coding scheme we have developed. We give examples on how we applied it to a multimodal corpus by producing descriptions. We also provide details about the software we have developed for parsing such descriptions and for computing metrics measuring the cooperation between modalities. Although this paper is concerned with the input side (human towards machine) and thus deals with the annotation of human behavior observed in multimodal corpora, we also provide some ideas on how it might be of use for specifying cooperation between output modalities in multimodal agents.

Although these expressions belong to the basic vocabulary of languages, only minimum important research has been done in this direction for the Modern Greek language. In particular, this paper examines the factors that have to be taken into account in order to understand the metaphorical interpretation of these expressions and suggest ways of teaching them within the framework of teaching Modern Greek as a Foreign Language. The research is focused on students of the School of Modern Greek (level B2, adults), Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH), whilst the methodology is mainly based on the cognitive approach.

More specifically, it examines the color neologisms occurred in fashion, an area that is constantly evolving and updated. Initially, an attempt has been made for a large index of color terms to be formed from fashion catalogues for e-shopping. Subsequently, we explore the processes underlying the emergence of the neologism in the above context (e-shopping catalogues), while mentioning new color loans. Finally, we discuss a number of issues that revolve color neologisms such as a possible classification, a semantic approach and new color metaphors.

In the beginning, after an introduction in the dictionary of colors and its characteristics, a description of the methodology that was used and the restrictions into consideration take place. Afterwards, the nouns and adjectives that declare color -not only general colors but also the nuances-are studied, and the different types of their definitions that exist in the dictionaries are presented. Finally, we discuss the conclusions and the emerged reflections while proposing ways of enriching the chromatic definitions.

This grammar includes information on their construction processes (prefixation, suffixation, composition, conversion), on the elements that participate in them, on the restrictions imposed by their application as well as on the deviations and peculiarities in their morphology, syntax, and semantics.
Furthermore, we applied our theoretical findings in the context of lexicography: we proposed a model of a dictionary of color terms and constructed an electronic dictionary of compound names that appear in specific semantic fields. Finally, we presented our teaching intervention within the context of teaching Greek as a second/foreign language, together with statistical conclusions regarding the effectiveness of our teaching and the extent of the participants’ acquisition.

However, despite the two-way interest between these two languages, to our knowledge, there are few linguistic studies to examine the two languages together.
This paper explores the errors which appear in written productions by Spanish learners of Modern Greek. A dynamic monolingual learner corpus (SLGC) has been constructed for the aim of this research. The corpus consists of 314 all-levels written productions by Spanish candidates in the Greek language certification exams organized by the ‘Center for the Greek language’ in various exam centers in Spain and Latin America.
The theoretical framework adopted by the present research is congruent with the principles of the interlanguage analysis on the study and interpretation of errors.
As regards methodology, the corpus is being processed with the use of adequate tools, computational error analysis practices are followed, while tools are drawn from Corpus and Computational Linguistics. The computational processing and quality analysis of the learner corpus according to the theoretical framework adopted, extracts the errors, which are then categorized according to certain criteria to be didactically used.
More specifically, the steps followed during the coding process are a) the compilation and digitalization/transcription of texts, b) the categorization according to their level, exam center, and genre, c) the processing of the annotation scheme, d) the manual annotation of errors, and e) the statistical analysis.
For the annotation, we used the free software UAM Corpus Tool, which allows us to manually annotate multiple texts using the same annotation scheme, based on the error taxonomy we created to fulfill the needs of our research.
The SLGC project is useful to provide data on Spanish learners’ interlanguage and contribute to linguistic research and improvement in the curriculum design of teaching Greek as L2.
