Born in North Ferriby (then Yorkshire) in 1964, I grew up in Stourport on Severn, Worcestershire. Attended secondary school at King Charles I school, Kidderminster (a state comprehensive school). After a year largely working as an archaeologist on various excavations around England and Wales I studied Archaeology and History Equal Honours at the University of York, in 1986 receiving the first First-Class degree ever awarded by York's archaeology department. For my D.Phil., I stayed at York and wrote my thesis on the history and archaeology of the region of Metz in the Merovingian period, under the supervision of Edward James. My thesis examiners were Steve Roskams (archaeology, York) and Bryan Ward-Perkins (history, Oxford). The thesis was submitted in 1990 but not examined until 1991. I taught at UK universities in London and Yorkshire, getting my chair in 2006, before retiring in 2023

Before c.600, Western European military forces were recognisably descended from the last western Roman armies, as can quickly be demonstrated. Late Roman troops had sometimes been paid via the delegation of fiscal revenues and, as earlier, received allotments of land on retirement. 1 Their hereditary service, 2 furthermore, exempted them from certain taxes. In the fourth and fifth centuries a series of military identities evolved, based around oppositions to traditional civic Roman ideals. These turned on ideas of barbarism, enhanced by possibly increased recruitment beyond the frontiers and greater opportunities for non-Roman soldiers to rise to higher command. 3 As the territory effectively governed from Ravenna, the imperial capital, shrank during the fifth century, and with it the available taxation and recruiting * I am grateful to the Leverhulme Foundation for the award of a Major Research Fellowship, which allowed me to work on this chapter. Much of this chapter, especially the sections on recruitment and organisation, is based upon Guy Halsall, Warfare and Society in the Barbarian West (London, UCL Press, 2003), which contains most of the relevant bibliography. This chapter argues that although victory remained absolutely central to royal ideals and imagery... more This chapter argues that although victory remained absolutely central to royal ideals and imagery, there was a crucial change between the late Roman and the early medieval western worlds. Though key features remained (processions etc.) there was a decisive shift of emphasis towards Christian celebration presided over by the church; towards thanksgiving rather than praise; and towards Old Testament imagery. It is argued that a key phase of this shift took place after the Justinianic wars of the mid-sixth century. This change is explained in terms of the renegotiation of the ideological bases of power caused by Justinian's wars and the end of the Roman Empire. In this more Christian mode of thought, credit for victory was not appropriately given to mortal warriors, however skilful. Finally, the developments in the nature of 'triumphal' rulership are ascribed to a change in the 'geo-political' nature of the West and perhaps to a difference in the types of warfare being waged. 1 McCormick 1986. Not the least task of the present paper is to attempt to say something significant and additional to McCormick's monumental volume.

A grave-robbing in Metz In September 585 a woman was buried in a church in Metz. Dying childless,... more A grave-robbing in Metz In September 585 a woman was buried in a church in Metz. Dying childless, she was interred with 'much gold and a profusion of ornaments." Such circumstantial written evidence about a burial, gravegoods and the deceased's status is rare indeed in early Merovingian northern Gaul. Gregory of Tours recorded this story because the woman in question was an affinal relative of Duke Guntramn BOSO, who then dispatched his retainers to open the grave and retrieve the grave-goods while the czvitas population went on the annual procession to St-Kemyde-Scy (I October). The episode ended in disgrace. His men were caught red-handed; Guntramn was brought before Childebert I1 of Austrasia and charged, presumably with grave-robbing (one of the few crimes punishable with outlawry in early Merovingian Gaul);3 defenceless, he fled in secret, and his property was recovered by the fisc. Two years later, never having regained favour, he was tried again and killed on Childebert's orders.4 The tale suited Gregory's purpose admirably. ' I should like to thank Edward James,

The relationships between gender, sex, and sexuality are far more complex than is often acknowled... more The relationships between gender, sex, and sexuality are far more complex than is often acknowledged, whether in modern politics or in publications about medieval history. In a Merovingian context, this can be shown from various stories from the works of Gregory of Tours and from the archaeology of cemeteries. The spaces within which what we might term non-normative gendered identities could be enacted in Merovingian Gaul is examined via a discussion of the development of gendered norms from the classical Roman period to the seventh century. It is argued that a Roman concept of gender that focused on a single civic masculine ideal gradually evolved, not least through the emergence of more politically effective rival forms of masculinity, into a more binary sixth-century construction with separate masculine and feminine ideals. C e volume rassemble une sélection d'études qui furent, dans un premier temps, présentées dans le... more C e volume rassemble une sélection d'études qui furent, dans un premier temps, présentées dans le cadre de deux journées d'études sur le sujet des « Pillages, tributs, captifs : prédation et sociétés de l'Antiquité tardive au haut Moyen Âge », qui ont eu lieu les 28 et 29 juin 2012 dans les locaux de la Goethe Universität à Francfort. La rencontre fut organisée par l'Institut français d'histoire en Allemagne (IFHA)-depuis lors renommé Institut franco-allemand de sciences historiques et sociales (IFRA)-, en collaboration avec l'université de Hamburg, et a bénéficié d'une aide financière de la part de l'Université franco-allemande (UFA). Nous souhaitons remercier ici tous ceux qui ont rendu ce projet possible. Cette rencontre a été organisée dans un cadre institutionnel précis : l'IFRA s'est fait le porteur depuis plusieurs années d'une démarche qui consiste à donner aux doctorants membres de l'Institut la possibilité d'organiser un colloque dont la thématique est liée à leur thème d'étude. Ce cadre favorable permet la rencontre entre de jeunes chercheurs et d'autres plus chevronnés, autour d'un effort commun de renouvellement historiographique. Nous tenons à remercier vivement Pierre Monnet, directeur de l'IFRA, qui s'est impliqué dans le projet en le soutenant tout au long de son organisation. N'oublions pas la Goethe Universität de Francfort-sur-le-Main qui a accueilli la rencontre, lui permettant de se dérouler dans un cadre idéal. Les éditeurs du présent ouvrage tiennent aussi à remercier tous les participants de la rencontre pour leurs contributions. Ce moment a été l'occasion d'échanges riches, autour d'une thématique jusque-là peu abordée par la recherche. Chacun des participants a apporté son expertise dans le domaine qui est le sien, pour parvenir à une meilleure compréhension globale de la prédation dans les sociétés considérées. Les apports de chacun sont apparus clairement, aussi bien lorsqu'il a été possible de constater des similarités ou des continuités, en matière de prédation, entre les différents contextes chronologiques et géographiques traités, que dans les différences qui sont parfois perceptibles dans la manière dont les sociétés de l'Antiquité tardive et du haut Moyen Âge intègrent cet ensemble de pratiques.

Northern Britain and the Fall of the Roman Empire

This article examines Roman-barbarian relations in the north of Britain in the context of cultura... more This article examines Roman-barbarian relations in the north of Britain in the context of cultural interactions on the other imperial frontiers. On the basis of the less confrontational model of Romano-barbarian interaction that this suggests, a rethinking of northern British politics is put forward. The withdrawal of effective Roman presence from the northern frontier (suggested in the later fourth century) caused political crises in the region between the walls and a break-up of the earlier Pictish confederacy. Change around 600 led, in turn, to the submerging of the British polities that had dominated the region since 400 by new powers, the English and the Scots, whose kingdoms’ foundation might belong to this period. Internal Pictish strife might explain why the Picts do not seem to be a very active player in the early seventh-century politics that are visible to us.
